Tiger golf begins season undefeated

GREENFIELD — Led by standout J.T. Bunner, the McClain Tigers' boys golf team started off the year with four straight victories.
The Tigers, who are the defending South Central Ohio League champions, collected two non-league wins over Fairfield (169-173) and East Clinton (169-178), along with a SCOL win against Madison-Plains (157-183). MHS also finished first in their host match, the McClain Invitational, with a score of 323, defeating nine schools.
In an Aug. 9 match at Buckeye Hills Country Club against Fairfield and East Clinton, Bunner shot par for the event at 36.
Ryan Perie finished second at 43, while Adam Sharp and Dustin Taylor each shot 45. Rounding out the team scoring were: Tanner Vanzant (49) and Caleb Cockerill (53). McClain finished at 169, with Fairfield coming in second at 173 and East Clinton finishing third with a score of 178.
MHS hosted the non-league McClain Invitational at Buckeye Hills on Aug. 10, with the course par of 71.
Ten area teams, including Highland County's MHS and Whiteoak, competed in the event.
"It was nice to play our first week at home to get used to the competition again before having to go on the road," McClain varsity coach Tim Bolender said.
Bunner continued to dominate the green, as he shot a 72 and earned medalist for the event.
Jacob Branham finished second for McClain, shooting a 79. Vanzant shot an 85, with Cockerill close behind at 87. Taylor and Sharp finished with a 91 and 98, respectively.
McClain finished the event in first place with a low score of 323. Whiteoak finished eighth with a score of 379. The eight remaining teams finished in the following order: 2, Blanchester, 329; 3, Washington, 344; 4, Huntington, 353; 5, Madison-Plains, 364; 6, London, 368; 7, Miami Trace, 370; 9, Southeastern, 386; and 10, Chillicothe, 395.
The invitational score counts as a separate league win for MHS, as the scores for the Tigers and MP from the front nine holes of the event were counted for their SCOL match due to scheduling conflicts later this fall.
Bunner impressed once again, shooting two under par at 34. Vanzant and Branham each earned a 39. Cockerill shot a 45, while Sharp and Taylor shot a 46 and 48 on the front nine, respectively.
MHS ends their first week of play with an SCOL record of 1-0 and a non-league record of 11-0.
