They are the champions: Mustangs win SHL title

FAYETTEVILLE — The Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs are back on top of the Southern Hills League mountain in boys soccer.
The Mustangs clinched the outright Division I SHL soccer championship with a 3-1 win over the Fayetteville Rockets, Friday at Fayetteville High School.
LC is 6-0-1 in the SHL and 12-0-2 overall.
"We played excellent soccer. We maintained the pressure on offense throughout the match," LC coach Dennis West said.
LC led 1-0 after the first 40 minutes and scored twice in the second half to seal the win and league title.
Michael Smith scored twice, once in each half. Kaique Costa scored a goal in the second half.
Smith put the Mustangs on the board first with 20:55 left in the opening half with the assist off a header from Jeremiah Hacker.
The lead went to two goals with Costa scoring at the 32:55 mark of the second half by beating the defense of the Rockets.
Conner put the Rockets on the board with a penalty kick conversion with 15 minutes left in the game.
Smith sealed the win by putting the Mustangs up by two goals again with 13:50 off the assist by Wesley Pierson.
"Kaique and Michael continue to lead our offense. Wesley's play enabled us to control the midfield at a crucial time in the match.
"Our defense has been our strength the whole season and certainly was against Fayetteville."
Colin Creek had four saves at goal. The Rockets out-shot the Mustangs 13-11. Fitzpatrick had two saves for Fayetteville.
