FAYETTEVILLE — The Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs are back on top of the Southern Hills League mountain in boys soccer.

The Mustangs clinched the outright Division I SHL soccer championship with a 3-1 win over the Fayetteville Rockets, Friday at Fayetteville High School.

LC is 6-0-1 in the SHL and 12-0-2 overall.

"We played excellent soccer. We maintained the pressure on offense throughout the match," LC coach Dennis West said.

LC led 1-0 after the first 40 minutes and scored twice in the second half to seal the win and league title.

Michael Smith scored twice, once in each half. Kaique Costa scored a goal in the second half.

Smith put the Mustangs on the board first with 20:55 left in the opening half with the assist off a header from Jeremiah Hacker.

The lead went to two goals with Costa scoring at the 32:55 mark of the second half by beating the defense of the Rockets.

Conner put the Rockets on the board with a penalty kick conversion with 15 minutes left in the game.

Smith sealed the win by putting the Mustangs up by two goals again with 13:50 off the assist by Wesley Pierson.

"Kaique and Michael continue to lead our offense. Wesley's play enabled us to control the midfield at a crucial time in the match.

"Our defense has been our strength the whole season and certainly was against Fayetteville."

Colin Creek had four saves at goal. The Rockets out-shot the Mustangs 13-11. Fitzpatrick had two saves for Fayetteville.
