Swackhamer resigns as HHS baseball coach

     Hillsboro High School head varsity baseball coach Rusty Swackhamer has resigned from his post effective immediately.
     Swackhamer led the Indians to back-to-back South Central Ohio League championships in his final two seasons at HHS. This season was a co-SCOL title with the McClain Tigers.
     In the last two seasons Hillsboro lost just four league games, all coming in the 2010 campaign, as Hillsboro had a perfect regular season in 2009.
     Hillsboro athletic director Dave Dietrick told The Highland County Press Friday afternoon that Swackhamer left the program due to his job away from baseball.
     "We talked a good bit and this isn't something he wanted to do, but due to the hours he has to put in during his job, and the length of his day, it was going to be impossible to be the head coach of the baseball team," Dietrick said. "I've known Rusty for years and he is a great person.
     "I've enjoyed working with him in the time I've been at Hillsboro and I hate to see him move on."
     Dietrick said the school has plenty of notice to fill in the head coaching role.
     "Hopefully, down the road he can still be a part of the program in some fashion; but as of today, with the classroom work he has to put in furthering his education for his current job, he can't do the day-to-day operations of the baseball team.
     "He's (Swackhamer) been going back-and-forth on his decision. He's spent a lot of time making his decision," Dietrick said. "He had a good run, won SCOL titles and was a part of one of the most exciting games I've seen, in the days (due to weather and darkness) it took to play McClain (HHS clinched a share of the title in the 10-9, 14-inning game at Shaffer Park)."
     Swackhamer is a former player for the Hillsboro Indians in the early '90s and he also played for the Chillicothe Paints baseball team.
