The Southern State soccer team won their season opener with a 4-0 win over Kuyper Christian College of Grand Rapids, Mich., on Friday, Aug. 26. The win advanced the Patriots into the Championship Game of the 9th annual Southern State Soccer Shootout Tournament. Ohio Midwestern University posted a win over West Virginia University's Parkersburg campus in the other first-round game.

“We’ve set many lofty goals for ourselves for 2011 and none are more important than the defensive goals,” said Josh Thoroman, SSCC head coach. “The team is on a mission to break the school records of posting the most shutout victories in a season and allowing the fewest goals in a season, both previously set in 2010.”

The fewest goals allowed in a season by an SSCC team is 24, and the most shutouts posted in a season by an SSCC team is six.

“I’d say 2011 is off to a great start,” Thoroman commented.

Southern State appeared to be showing some effects of first game jitters as they outshot Kuyper 13-4 in the opening half but only managed to tally one first half goal.  The Patriots opened the scoring in the 22nd minute when sophomore Tim Cook (Unioto H.S.) connected with junior All-American Nathan Rollyson (Wilmington H.S.) on a corner kick. It was 1-0 Southern State at the half.

Junior All-American Tyler Jimison (North Adams H.S.) added a goal in the 48th minute when Rollyson threaded a through ball to him. Jimison blasted a shot past the keeper that stuck firmly in the corner of the goal, between the net and the support bar.

Freshmen Daniel White (Greenfield McClain H.S.) scored a sliding goal, his first collegiate goal, when he converted a cross from Cook in the 78th minute. It was Cook's second assist of the game. Cook then added his own goal when he bent a free kick over the wall in the 86th minute.  Kuyper's keeper didn't have a chance to make the save as Cook placed his shot in the upper ninety corner of the left side of the goal.
