BAINBRIDGE - It is now week 10 for the Paint Valley Bearcats and they have upset on the mind as they travel to take on Scioto Valley Conference leader Zane Trace, who is seventh in their Division IV, Region 15 standings with a 7-2 overall record.
Paint Valley is coming off two straight wins and Paint Valley head coach Pete Hollon said he wants his team to finish the season out strong.
“We have to do three things correct if we want to win against Zane Trace,” he said. “We have to commit no turnovers, win the line of scrimmage and tackle very well. If we do those things, we give ourselves a chance to win. We are playing our best football of the season right now.”
Zane Trace is led by a three-year starter at quarterback in Kirk Maxwell. Hollon said Maxwell throws well and completes nearly 80 percent of his passes.
“They (Zane Trace) have two excellent receivers, who they like to get the ball to quickly,” Hollon said. “Once they get them the ball, they let them make the plays.”
The Pioneer offense runs isolation plays, while using the veer option.
“Their (ZTHS) fullback and tailback each weigh 200 pounds, so they have two nice sized backs,” Hollon said.
The defense of the Pioneers uses a base 5-2 formation, with linebacker Ben Jones leading the defensive side of the ball.
“Their entire secondary are three-year starters, and there is nothing flashy about them,” Hollon said. “They just really do a lot of things well, and don’t make a lot of mistakes. They bring their safeties up to about 6 yards away from the line of scrimmage, so it is like they have two more linebackers in the box. But, they are quick enough to get out of it and fly to the football.”
