Post 129 swings away for late-inning win

WASHINGTON C.H. — For the first five innings there were no fireworks for the Hillsboro Post 129 club at the start of Independence Day weekend. There were no bottle rockets, not even a sparkler.
The offensive explosion surfaced in the sixth inning, with five runs crossing the plate for a 5-3 Post 129 win over the Washington C.H. Post 25 Aces, Friday in Washington C.H.
Hillsboro continues to get closer to the .500 mark for the season, standing at 12-17 overall, but control their own fate in the league with a record of 6-4 in the SCOL.
The Hillsboro Legion team has won seven of their last 10 games.
"Up until the sixth inning, we didn't have a big hit. We were getting a few hits, but not the key hit," Hillsboro Post 129 General Manager Scott Morgan said.
Post 129 tallied just four hits in the first five innings, all being stranded, trailing by three runs when the sixth began.
Then everything came together for the away team with four hits, one walk, and a costly error by the Aces which allowed Hillsboro to take control of the game.
Corey Walker led off the inning with a walk on five pitches but was called out at second on a fielder's choice, allowing Tucker Hughes to take first base for Post 129. Cody Shaver, on a 3-2 count, reached first when the ball bounced out of the glove of the centerfielder.
Post 129 cut the Washington C.H. lead to one run with a double to left field by Brady Camp, scoring both Hughes and Shaver. Camp's hit, on a 2-2 count, was just the beginning with Uhl sending the ball off the pitcher's mound for a base hit. A heads-up Uhl took second on a slow throw back to the infield as the outfield of the Aces had problems handling the baseball. Camp scored on the slow throw.
Tyler Campbell tallied a base hit, but that was ruled a single by Dustin Taylor, as the path of the baseball held up Campbell between the bases, as Campbell was out at second. Taylor's fielder's choice put Hillsboro up 4-3, bringing home Uhl.
Taylor (2-for-3) stole second base and scored on a two-out base hit by Bryce Bean, giving the Post 129 club a two-run advantage.
"We took the extra bases when they were given to us, and Brady and Zach had two nice hits that led to runs being scored," Morgan said.
Hillsboro's big inning complemented the pitching of Matt Carey, who went the complete seven innings for the win on the hill. Carey tallied 11 pitches with three strikeouts. He allowed seven hits and four walks, which led to three earned runs.
"Matt (Casey) pitched a heck of a game," Morgan said.
Washington scored third runs in the first, second and third innings.
Hillsboro finished with nine hits, with eight players gaining at least one hit.
Morgan talked about the recent string of success the team has accomplished.
"Our pitching has been consistent. We are making the routine plays, and making those plays are important," he said. "If we make the routine plays … those win games. This team has that potential."
Post 129 will play again on Saturday and Sunday. Both days will have the same schedule with Hillsboro hosting Findlay at 12 p.m. and Portsmouth at 5 p.m. In-between those games, Findlay and Portsmouth will face each other. All games will be played with wooden bats at Shaffer Park.[[In-content Ad]]
