HILLSBORO — On Thursday, the Hillsboro American Legion Post 129 baseball team unraveled on defense, which allowed Madison County to take full advantage, defeating the home team 5-1 at Shaffer Park.
Post 129 managed five hits and forced five walks, but their lone run came in the seventh inning, after they were trailing by five runs.
Hillsboro stranded a total of 12 base runners against Madison County.
The Hillsboro squad threatened in the third inning, as they trailed 4-0, with Pappas forcing a four-pitch walk to start the inning. Bean followed by taking first after getting hit by a pitch with one out.
With two outs, Cody Shaver forced a walk, but the inning was ended with a Post 129 strikeout on a 1-2 count.
In the bottom of the fourth, Post 129 had two base runners in Tucker Hughes and Carey, but again, they were left on the bases.
The same thing happened in the sixth with Bean singling to start the inning, but he was out on second when Corey Walker hit into a fielder's choice. Walker was then out at second on a fielder's choice by Shaver. Nathaniel Miller hit a single that landed just in front of the centerfielder. But the inning ended on a called third strike.
Post 129 left two runners on the base in the sixth with Carey singling and Meyer forcing a two-out walk. For the third time with runners on the bases, Post 129 ended the inning with a strikeout.
Madison County scored two runs in the first and two more in the second for a 4-0 lead. They added their final run in the sixth inning.
Pitching for Post 129 was Zach Uhl and in relief was Tyler Campbell. Uhl pitched six innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on five hits and six walks. Uhl finished with nine strikeouts.

On Tuesday, Post 129 opened their 2011 season with a 1-0 loss at Piqua Post 189 in a scheduled nine-inning game.
Piqua scored their lone run in the third inning.
Post 129 had three hits.
