OU hires Shumate as Director of Strength and Conditioning

Ohio University Athletics is excited to welcome Tyler Shumate to its staff as the Director of Strength and Conditioning.
Shumate comes to Ohio by way of the University of New Mexico, where he served as the Associate Director of Sport Performance since January 2024.
"I am very excited to welcome Tyler to Athens," said Head Football Coach Tim Albin. "He is an expert in his field and has worked with multiple football programs; I have no doubt that our team will benefit greatly from working with him.”
Prior to working with the Lobos football program, Shumate was the Associate AD of Sports Performance at Northern Arizona from June 2021 – December 2023, where he planned and implemented all aspects of training for the football team on top of overseeing the NAU Sports Performance Department.
From January 2018 – June 2021, Shumate was the Assistant Football Development and Performance Coach at his alma mater, Virginia. While there, he also served as the director of the UVA Sport Performance Internship program.
Shumate made his second of two stops at Arizona State in May 2017, returning as a sport performance graduate assistant after working as a sport performance intern during the summer of 2016. Between his two tours of ASU, Shumate assisted eight different sports, including football, volleyball, women's gymnastics and water polo.
Shumate earned a bachelor's in exercise science and a minor in coaching at the University of Mount Union in Alliance, Ohio. He continued his education at Virginia, where he earned a Master of Education, specializing in higher education and intercollegiate athletics administration.
