Not off the Press: Finally ... A busy three days of games

Before the Whiteoak Wildcats vs. Lynchburg-Clay baseball this past week, there was an announcement made to not be worried about the bright object in the sky. WHS principal JR Roush was correct in his announcement, it was just the sun. Yep, we finally were able to return to the ball diamonds for baseball and softball games.
Yes, after what seemed like a month of rain, I was able to cover baseball again. It may have been only for three days (Thursday-Saturday), but it was nice to feel the heat of the sun and get a glimpse of summer weather.
On Sunday, the sectional baseball and softball games were announced, and a big thanks to Tom Purtell for sending all six brackets to the media via email and Paul Boggs for faxing the brackets.
With this being a big week for politics in Highland County, all there is left to say is I'm Stephen Forsha, and I approve this column.
• Mustangs are SHL champs
Though I didn't get to the game until the third inning Saturday (was covering a game in Greenfield at 8:45 a.m.), I got to see the Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs win their second consecutive Division I Southern Hills League championship at LCHS.
They won the title with four members from last year's squad and first-year varsity head coach Garyn Waits.
It was nice seeing this team, which is basically a different starting line-up and almost a new pitching staff, take care of business for a second straight season. They deserve to be called SHL champions.
LC has won 23 of their last 24 SHL games in the past two seasons.
Great job, Mustangs.
• Also on Saturday
The McClain Lady Tigers softball and Hillsboro Indians baseball teams were victorious in their cross-county South Central Ohio League games, which were finished before noon.
Both of these teams had great weeks by not losing a single SCOL game in three straight days of playing their respective sport.
MHS softball is currently in first place in the league, but they still have some games remaining before they can be crowned champs.
The HHS baseball team has had a complete turnaround after a slow start. Coach Tim Hunt said in their last five games, the Indians have scored 61 runs. Is it me or are the HHS Indians playing like the big league club in Cleveland, as they both keep winning baseball games?
HHS baseball has won five straight games, and on Saturday they just kept hitting the baseball, finishing with 14 hits and 11 runs.
This week, weather permitting, should be a good week of SCOL baseball.
• Cincinnati Bengals' draft
I really liked the draft by the Bengals. They got a big-time receiver in AJ Green, plus got a possible quarterback of the future in Andy Dalton. So I guess if Carson Palmer wants to retire then, he's free to go. I like the interview coach Marvin Lewis gave on day two of the draft pertaining to Palmer and wished him luck in whatever he decides.
I think the reason the Bengals drafted well was because they put a sign on the door that said football meeting in progress … Keep Out Mike Brown.
Just a thought.
• 10 thoughts of high school sports
1. It was a good time covering games at two different venues on Saturday.
2. It is nice that all the baseball district final games are at Paints Stadium in Chillicothe. Also, some of the district final games are as well.
3. The Fairfield Lady Lions are closing in on a potential SHL Division II softball title.
4. The Hillsboro Indians' baseball team looks like a completely different team than from the start of the season.
5. Excited for the start of the postseason.
6. The Miami Trace Panthers baseball team are probably the best team I've had the chance to see this season. That could change, though.
7. Glad I wasn't at the LC-Ripley baseball game the other night. Twenty-one runs in six innings by the Mustangs would have made for a long night. Good win, though.
8. The best baseball play of the week had to be a tie between the 6-4-3 double play by LC vs. Whiteoak or 7-2-5 double play HHS had against McClain.
9. I really hope the regular season of spring sports can wrap up this week.
10. I watched Ty Leach of MT throw a no-hitter vs. McClain this past week. Though it was against one of our Highland County teams, you have to give props to a pitcher anytime they toss a no-hitter.

The Mustangs have won 22 SHL baseball titles with their win on Saturday.

"I'm excited for this group. We brought back four guys from last season's group, so it is a different team. I've had most of these kids at the JV level for the past two years, so that's cool to get your own stamp on some things here. Winning a league title is something we expect, that's where it's at, and it is our goal. Now our goal is to win a sectional." — Garyn Waits, LC varsity baseball head coach.

• One last item of business
When we've actually had games this season, they have been very competitive. Though it seems some teams are going opposite directions, and the tournament starts next week, I hope everyone enjoys this final month at the ball diamonds, tennis courts or at the track because before we know it … the season will be over.
