Mustangs win 3 straight soccer matches

DODSONVILLE — The Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs boys soccer team has continued to stay undefeated in their last three games. In the three-game stretch, the Mustangs have defeated the Miami Trace Panthers, Fairfield Lions and Hillsboro Indians.
Their most recent win came on Saturday as they moved their overall record to 6-0-2 with a 5-1 win over the Panthers of Miami Trace at LCHS.
"The boys were ready to play and it showed," LC coach Dennis West said. "I don't remember starting a goal in each half within the first minute."
But that is what happened on Saturday.
In the opening minute of the first half, Michael Smith got the first goal of the game at the 39:11 mark, as Tyler Davidson was credited with the assist.
The start of the second half opened up with a goal from Kaikue Costa, who put the ball in the back of the net with 39:30 left in the game. It was the first of three second-half goals by the junior.
Though Smith scored the game's opening goal, he wasn't done yet as he netted a second goal with 7:01 left in the first 40 minutes of play. He was assisted by Matt West to make the score 2-0. That was Smith's sixth straight goal, as he had two against Fairfield and two against the Hillsboro Indians.
After the aforementioned goal by Costa to start the second half, he was at it again with 28 minutes remaining when he nailed his second goal with the assist from Smith. Smith assisted in Costa's first two goals against the Panthers.
The final goal by the Mustangs and Costa came with 25:17 for a 5-0 lead as Costa beat the Miami Trace defense for his third goal and hat-trick.
Miami Trace scored with 13:08 with a goal by Nathan Bowers. His goal came off a pass by Bryant Montgomery.
LC keeper Colin Creek had five saves in 80 minutes.
"Our defense was great with only one breakdown late in the the second half," West said.
Miami Trace out-shot the Mustangs, 18-15.

Lynchburg-Clay 2, Fairfield 0
LEESBURG - On Friday, Sept. 17 at Fairfield High School, the Mustangs defeated Highland County and Southern Hills League rival Fairfield, 2-0 in a non-league game.
Both goals were scored by Michael Smith in the first half.
The first goal by Smith came with 33:17 off a cross-kick by Matt West.
His second goal was scored with 13:03 left in the opening half via penalty kick.
Fairfield's Brandon Carmean had seven saves at goal and LC keeper Colin Creek also had seven. LC out-shot the Lions, 19-11.
"This was a very even contest," LC coach Dennis West said. "Fairfield has improved greatly from last year. Our experience made a big difference."
West talked about Smith.
"Michael continued his excellent offense, and our defense is really playing excellent soccer. I'm very pleased with our overall performance."

HILLSBORO - On Wednesday, Sept. 15, the Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs returned from a week-long break due to the Highland County Fair and began where they left off with a 2-0 win over the Hillsboro Indians at Richards Memorial Field.
Michael Smith led the Mustangs with both goals scored in the two-goal win against one of Lynchburg-Clay's Highland County rivals.
Both goals came in the second half as the score was tied at zero after 40 minutes.
Smith's first goal came with 24:26 in the second half off a pass by Wesley Pierson.
The final goal by Smith was at the 16:16 mark with Smith scoring off a cross-kick by Kaikue Costa.
Corey Walker (HHS) had 10 saves at goal for the Indians. Colin Creek finished with four as LC out-shot the Indians 19-9 in the 80-minute game.
"We played hard for 80 minutes, and we were able to get many good opportunities at the goal but only finished with two," LC coach Dennis West said. "It was a good match for us against a hardworking Hillsboro team."
