Mustangs top Rockets for 1st win of season

DODSONVILLE — The Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs came out of the halftime break with a productive second half offensively, leading to a 10-point win Friday night against Southern Hills League counterpart Fayetteville, 48-38 at LCHS.
The Mustangs led 16-11 after the first quarter, and led at halftime 18-15 after the Rockets out-scored the Mustangs, 4-2 in the second frame.
In the 16-point first quarter, Dylan Noll of Lynchburg-Clay scored six points, while teammates Dallas Puckett, Wes Pierson, Austin Fawley and Steven Collins added to the first-quarter totals.
In the two-point second frame, it was Puckett who scored for LC. In that quarter, LC was 0-of-4 from the free-throw line, missing the front end of two opportunities of a one-and-one at the free-throw line.
The first half for the Rockets didn't fare well either, with their four second-quarter points. D.J. Iles and Chad Evans scored for them in the second frame. In the opening quarter, the Rockets made three 3-pointers, with Iles making two and Trevor Clark making one.
Both teams bounced back in the third quarter, with both scoring in double figures. LC scored 19 points in the third with Tyler Davidson making two 3-pointers. Fawley knocked down a 3-pointer and two-point basket and Puckett scored two points. Noll was 2-of-2 from the free-throw line in the third quarter.
Noll and Puckett led the Mustangs with 10 points each, followed by Pierson and Fawley with nine each for the game.
Iles made his third 3-pointer in the third quarter, along with a two-point basket and a free throw. Nick Durham scored five points in the same quarter for the Rockets. Iles led all scorers with 17 points.
For the Mustangs in the fourth quarter, it was Puckett, Pierson, Fawley, Noll and Collins combining for the 11 points scored by LC.
Tanner Williams scored six of the nine Fayetteville points in the fourth frame. Iles sank his fourth 3-pointer in the final frame.
