DODSONVILLE - The Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs have started the season with a fury. They have scored runs playing small ball and have hit the long ball, en route to a 4-0 overall record. In SHL play, LC is 3-0.
In their third victory of the season, the Mustangs defeated the Eastern Brown Warriors 8-3 in Southern Hills League play.
"I told the kids the SHL title goes through Eastern," LC head coach Aric Fiscus said. "They have won the league three years in a row, and this was a positive step for us."
LC scored one run in each of the first two innings, then added six more combined fourth and fifth innings.
The first run of the game came in the first with Dalton Cox leading off with a base hit. Cox then stole second and scored on an RBI single by Darrin Harp.
In the second, with two outs, Wes Pierson doubled and the bases were loaded with Dakota Dye reaching on an error. Cox took first when he was hit by a pitch.
Harp forced a bases-loaded walk to bring home Pierson.
"It always helps when you can get runs in the first couple innings," Fiscus said. "We want to score at least one run a inning, and we want runners on base. We are starting to show abilities that we can do that. We have been getting the runs when we need them."
As Eastern had all zeros on the board after their fourth time at the plate, the Mustangs continued to add to their lead, scoring four in the fourth and two in the fifth.
The fourth started with Dallas Puckett singling, and he took third on a base hit by Pierson. Dye loaded the bases for LC with a walk.
Cox then forced a base on balls to score Puckett. Pierson and Dye also scored, with Pierson scoring on a base hit by Cody Roush. Dye scored on an error.
In the fifth, Pierson and Cox rounded the bases on a two-run home run by Cox.
