WEST UNION - The Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs continued to score multiple runs in the early and late innings for a 12-0 shutout victory over the West Union Dragons Thursday at West Union High School.
"Having the big inning late, along with scoring runs early, has been the hallmark of our team all season," LC head coach Aric Fiscus said.
Another part of the game that pleased Fiscus was the pitching performance by senior Cody Roush.
The four-year starter pitched six innings, allowing no runs, no walks in a three-hitter. Roush finished with 12 strikeouts.
"Cody's pitching performance was dominate," Fiscus said. "In the first three innings he faced the minimum and struck out the side in a couple of those innings."
The Mustangs (11-2, 8-0) started the game with four runs in the first two innings.
In the top of the first lead off hitter Dalton Cox hit a single, and stole second base to reach scoring position. Austin Fawley moved Cox to third base on a single, and Ray Doss knocked in Cox for the first run of the game. Ryan Doss followed with a two-run double to plate Fawley and Ray Doss for the 3-0 first inning advantage.
In the second, LC added one run to their lead with Darren Harp reaching the bases after being hit by a pitch. He scored on a three-base blast by Cox.
After adding runs in the first two innings, the big inning of the Mustangs came in the top of the sixth.
Wes Pierson reached first with a single, stole second and took third on a ground out by Kris Moberly. Harp brought in Pierson with a single.
The Mustangs added seven more runs in the same inning, all with two outs.
Harp scored on a double by Cox. Cox finished the game 3-for-3 with 2 RBIs and two runs.
With Cox reaching second, the senior scored on a base hit by Fawley. Fawley rounded the bases when Roush doubled. Ray Doss followed by reaching first on an error, moving Roush to third. Ryan Doss capitalized on the Dragons' fielding by taking first on an error, allowing Roush to score.
Dallas Puckett loaded the base with a single and Pierson hit a two-run single to score Ray and Ryan Doss. Puckett scored on a single by Moberly.
"The guys have been patient at the plate all season," Fiscus said. "We are getting pitchers deep in the count and that has worked in our favor."
Fawley, Ryan Doss and Pierson all went 2-for-4.
The win lifts LC to 11-2 overall, 8-0 in the SHL.
