Mustangs fall to Zane Trace
CHILLICOTHE – The Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs were defeated for just the second time this season as they dropped a non-league game Saturday to the Zane Trace Pioneers 3-1 at ZTHS.
After 40 minutes the Mustangs (4-1-1, 8-2-3) led 1-0 after sophomore forward Tyler Davidson scored at the 30 minute mark of the half off a cross kick from sophomore forward Michael Smith.
The second half was a different story for the Mustangs, as Zane Trace scored three times, while keeping the Mustangs out of the net for the win.
“It was a tale of two halves. We played a very strong first half, and really struggled in the second half,” Lynchburg-Clay coach Dennis West said. “Our midfield tired out and left our defense at a disadvantage several times in the last 20 minutes.”
With 25:00 remaining in the second half Justin Wells tied the game at 1-1 off a rebound.
Wyatt Smith gave Zane Trace the lead at 2-1 with a goal at the 11:00 mark of the half. The final goal, which sealed the victory for the Pioneers, came with 8:00 remaining in the game as David Hathaway netted a goal on a 25-yard kick.
L-C junior keeper Colin Creek had 12 saves in 80 minutes at the goal. For Zane Trace, Weisenberger and Joel Tripp each played 40 minutes at keeper, totaling for two saves. The Mustangs were out shot 31-13.
“Zane Trace is a quality of team that will convert chances when they have the opportunity, and they did,” West said.
The loss drops the Mustangs to 8-2-3 overall, with a Southern Hills League record of 4-1-1.
