Mustangs fall in sectional final

WAVERLY — The Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs' season came to an end Friday night at Waverly High School, as they were defeated by the state-ranked Peebles Indians, 76-61.

The game, which involved two Southern Hills League teams (including the reigning champion Peebles), saw the Mustangs fall early, trailing 21-9 after the opening frame.

LC did rally back in the second quarter with 21 points, but the Indians tallied 16. PHS led 37-30 at halftime.

PHS (20-1) came back with a 20-point third quarter and 19 more points in the fourth. For the Mustangs, they scored 18 in the third and 13 in the fourth.

The duo of Blake Justice, the all-time career scoring leader of the Southern Hills League, and Andy Countryman, both seniors, led the Indians in scoring. Justice finished with a game-high 27 points, and Countryman scored 25 points. Justice was 9-of-16 from the field, and Countryman was 8-of-11. Justice made three 3-pointers, and Countryman sank five 3-point baskets.

For the Mustangs, they were led by Dylan Noll with 20 points and four rebounds.

Austin Fawley tallied 14 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals. Wes Pierson and Tyler Davidson each scored nine points, followed by Dallas Puckett with six. Austin Gorman scored three points.

LC had 11 turnovers and PHS had 10. The Indians out-rebounded the Mustangs, 24-18.

Seniors who played their final game for LC included: Dallas Puckett, Shain Gragg, Austin Fawley, Dylan Noll and Steven Collins.

The Mustangs finished the season at 8-14 overall.[[In-content Ad]]
