Mustangs dominate Greyhounds in SHL victory

DODSONVILLE — The Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs not only finished before the rain on Friday, but they took down their Southern Hills League foe Manchester, in five innings, defeating the Manchester Greyhounds 10-0, in a run-rule victory.
LC scored four runs in the first inning and five in the second for a 9-0 lead. The Mustangs added their 10th and final run in the third inning.
"The boys have been really focused as they come to the ball park the last three games," LC head coach Garyn Waits said. "Defensively, we played very well the past two games."
Gage Waits (2-0) pitched the complete game and earned the win. The freshman pitched all five innings, striking out five. He walked two and allowed just a single hit.
At the plate for the Mustangs, who are 6-1 in the SHL, Waits went 2-for-3, with one run, one RBI and one steal.
Wes Pierson finished 2-for-2 at the plate, including a double. Pierson scored three runs and collected one RBI.
Dallas Puckett had a sacrifice fly to bring a runner across the plate. He finished with two RBIs.
The Mustangs have committed zero errors in their last two games.
"A lot of the credit has to go to our pitching staff," Garyn Waits said. "They are almost full-strength for the first time this year, and we are hitting the spots when we need to. This takes a lot of the pressure off of our defense."
LC is off this week, but are scheduled for a doubleheader this coming Saturday against the Huntington Huntsmen. Next week's schedule will consist of three straight away games, all three against SHL opponents. Next Monday, LC will travel to face Peebles, followed by a Tuesday game at North Adams and Thursday at Ripley. LC will host the Whiteoak Wildcats next Friday.[[In-content Ad]]
