Mustangs advance in postseason

WAVERLY — The Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs earned their 11th overall win of the season Tuesday night. In the process of winning, LC moved forward in postseason play, defeating the West Union Dragons 60-37 Tuesday, at Waverly in a Division III SE District sectional semifinal matchup.
[[In-content Ad]]The Mustangs (11-10) dominated the opening quarter, leading 16-6, followed by a second quarter of 13-8, for a halftime lead of 29-14.
In the third, LC outscored the Dragons 18-11, for a third quarter advantage of 47-35.
The final eight minutes was nearly even with LC in complete control of the final outcome, winning the fourth 13-12.
LC was led by Gage Waits with a game-high 21 points, including five 3-pointers. The sophomore made two threes in the first and one in the second frame. He added one more in each of the next two quarters in the second half.
Alec Smith followed with 19 points, including a 5-of-6 night from the free-throw line. Smith made seven two-point baskets.
Ryan Inman scored seven points, and Matt West scored six points. Also scoring for LC was Tyler Davidson with three, Austin Gorman with two and Wes Pierson with two points.
Leading WU was Huntley with seven points, as the Dragons finished the season at 1-20 overall.
The Mustangs (a No. 6 seed) will play in a sectional final game on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 8 p.m. against No. 3-seeded Piketon at Waverly High School.
