Miami Trace tops Lady Tigers
GREENFIELD – The McClain Lady Tigers celebrated their seniors Tuesday night at McClain Field, but the Miami Trace Lady Panthers cut the celebration short as they rallied after trailing in the first half, for a 2-1 South Central Ohio League win.
Seniors for the 2009 Lady Tigers are: Christy Weller, Katie Wallen, Sarah Upp, Savanah Brown, Jen Jones, Myriah George, Sarah Elrhanjaoui and Taneka Hughes.
In the first half, McClain senior Sarah Upp scored the first goal of the contest at the 25:02 mark for the early 1-0 lead.
McClain continued to lead throughout the first half until the clock went under one minute, as Miami Trace’s Julie McKay netted a goal with .26 seconds left in the opening 40-minute period.
The Lady Panthers didn’t wait long to take the lead, as McKay score what would be the game-winning goal with 34:34 left in the second half.
McClain had a few chances to tie the game in the second half, but shots taken at the goal went wide right or sailed wide left.
In the final five minutes of play, the Lady Tigers pressured the Lady Panthers, keeping the ball in MT territory, as one final attempt to tie the game curved just left past the net with 1:08 left in the game.
“Our senior leadership kept us in the game, and it was evident on the field (Tuesday),” McClain coach Darrell Upp said. “Just listening to our seniors and watching them, I am proud of how they played against Miami Trace.
“Losing this game stings. It’s tough and there were a lot of tears. We could have been in third place with the win, but now we drop to fifth in the SCOL, which is still better than last year. All of our girls played well and I am proud of them.”
MHS has one final home game remaining as they will host the London Lady Red Raiders in a makeup game this Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at McClain Field.
The last time LHS and McClain faced off, the Lady Tigers shut out London 5-0 at London High School for their first ever SCOL win.
The loss to Miami Trace drops McClain to 3-11 overall, 2-7 in the SCOL.
