MHS, HHS bring balance to 1986 race

Circleville met the Hillsboro Indians on the Hillsboro court Nov. 29, 1985.
After a torrid battle, the Indians came out on top, 48-46. Ritchie Butler, Kenny McCord and Dale Richie led the Indians. Dade scored 12 points to lead Circleville.
The next night, Miami Trace, under new coach John Kost, invaded Greenfield, determined to push the McClain Tigers to the wall. But the Tigers penetrated the Miami Trace zone with ease, and rushed to a 20-4 first-quarter lead. It was 37-11 at halftime and 56-23 after three quarters.
Both teams played their second strings the fourth stanza, and the final score was 72-30.
Joey King led McClain with 16 points as practically everyone scored.
Barry Ankrom’s seven points were the Panthers’ best.
At Washington, the Blue Lions trounced the Wilmington Hurricane, 71-48. The Lions employed a variety of defenses, all of which worked.
Wilmington also had a number of players get in early foul trouble early in the game, and their depth was not overly impressive. They were just never really in this game.
After the first SCOL round of SCOL games, McClain, Hillsboro and Washington were all 1-0, while Wilmington, Miami Trace and Circleville were all 0-1.
On Friday, Dec. 6, Circleville would invade Wilmington, Washington would be at McClain and Hillsboro would travel to Miami Trace.
Wilmington took Circleville too lightly, and the Tigers grabbed a 69-65 overtime win over the Hurricane.
Miami Trace looked more like a team as they pinned a 63-49 defeat on the Indians, and McClain had to go all-out to beat Washington, 66-57.
On Friday the 13th, Miami Trace coach John Kost went the entire 32 minutes with his starters and edged the Wilmington Hurricane, 63-62, on the Miami Trace court.
Little 5’6” sophomore guard Rob Cleaver, a surprise starter, led the ’Canes with 20 points, but the Panthers had four men in double figures, led by Mark Matthews’ 18 markers.
McClain remained unbeaten by thumping the Hillsboro Indians, at Hillsboro, 65-50.
Doug Mustard’s 15 markers led the Tigers. Dale Richie’s 11 set the mark for the Indians.
At Circleville, Washington came out on top in a 63-50 tussle with the Tigers.
On Friday, Dec. 20, 1985, McClain’s sharpshooter, Tony Jackson, racked up 22 points at Wilmington, and the visiting Tigers captured their seventh win of the season, 78-55.
Elsewhere, Hillsboro led WCH 25-23 at halftime, but the Lions came back to register a tough 68-61 home court SCOL victory over the Indians. Both teams had three men in double figures.
At Circleville, the home-standing Tigers took a 64-49 win over the Miami Trace Panthers.
McClain’s Tony Jackson was leading the pack in the individual scoring race, with a 21.2 ppg. average in nine games (which included non-league contests).
He was followed by Mark Matthews of Miami Trace, who averaged 17.9 ppg. also in nine games.
Wilmington’s Mike Taylor and John Lambcke followed with 17.0 and 15.9 ppg., respectively, although Taylor had played in only two games after recovering from a football injury.
Going into the break for the Christmas holiday, the League standings were:
