GREENFIELD — Pitching was the name of the game Friday in Greenfield. With two top South Central Ohio League pitchers battling each and every inning, it was the McClain Lady Tigers who produced behind their pitching as they defeated the London Lady Red Raiders 1-0.
"We came out and avenged the loss against one of the best pitchers in the SCOL," MHS head coach Jarrod Haines said. "Megan had good defense behind her, and other players stepped up."
McClain's Megan Dettwiller finished with seven strikeouts, as the junior allowed just three hits and three walks in the shutout victory.
Dettwiller's pitching was on target with two strikeouts each in the first and seventh innings and at least one strikeout in every inning but the sixth.
But the pitching by the London Lady Red Raiders was on target as well.
Hurley finished with 12 strikeouts in the loss to McClain. She started off the game with three K's and had two more three-strikeout innings in the fourth and sixth. She struck out two in the third and one in the second. Hurley also allowed one run (one earned) on three hits and no walks.
The lone run came in the second inning when Jenna Perie reached on an error. Cierra Landrum was the pinch runner for Perie and scored on a double by Sasha Lawwell in the bottom of the second inning. Frankie Wise also reached the bases in the second on a sacrifice to the pitcher, moving Lawwell to third.
"Sasha had a big hit, and Jenna put the ball in play," Haines said.
The Lady Tigers also had base runners in the fourth and sixth innings.
In the fourth, Perie doubled, and in the sixth, MHS had three different players reach the bases.
One of the top plays of the game in the beginning of the sixth inning, when Alyssa Bean made a diving catch, rushing from left field to center field for the first out of the inning.
"Alyssa made a great catch in the outfield. We have been working on that in practice as of late," Haines said.
London threatened in the top of the seventh with a runner advancing to third base, but Dettwiller finished off the inning, striking out the last batter.
In their first meeting, London defeated the Lady Tigers 6-0.
Hammond hit a single, Perie reached on an error, and Lawwell was hit in the foot by a pitch.
