McClain ends season in districts; lose shootout

LUCASVILLE — The McClain Tigers and Waverly Tigers put on a strong show of soccer skill and great effort on Wednesday night, but in the end, following a 10-kick shootout, it is Waverly who is moving on to the district finals as they defeated McClain, 3-2 at Valley High School.
The loss was the first of the year for the reigning three-time South Central Ohio League champion McClain Tigers. They finish the season at 16-1-1 overall, as they went 12-0 in SCOL games, while winning a sectional title last weekend.
"What can you say about this group … they are all heart," McClain coach Shawn Jackson said. "They did everything we've asked of them this season, and I couldn't have asked for any more from any team.
"They (Waverly) had to come back, we had to come back … it was just an all-out battle."
The Division II SE District Semifinal match, which took over two hours in the pouring rain on Wednesday night, consisted of not only two overtime periods as the score was tied at 2-2 following the 80 minutes of regulation soccer, but two 15-minute overtime periods with no score, followed by two five-kick shootouts where Waverly outscored McClain, 10-9 to seal the postseason win.
The five who took part in the first shootout for the MHS Tigers were Sam Henry, Luis Rivas, Nic Rivas, Zack Harper and Ryan Case.
The second shootout group for MHS included: Trey Lytle, Chris Parker, Ben Chamblin and Reid Garrison.
"We played with all heart, and the team left it all out on the field," Jackson said. "This loss takes nothing away from the season we had. It was a great season, and it will be something the guys will remember for the rest of their lives."
Waverly moves to 16-1-2 overall and will face Warren for the district title. Warren defeated Circleville 3-1 on Wednesday. The district final will take place on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 4 p.m. at VHS with the winner moving to regionals.
At halftime, McClain led 1-0 off a goal from Luis Rivas with around 13 minutes remaining in the opening half.
In the second half, Waverly scored two goals to take a 2-1 lead with around 14 minutes left in regulation.
McClain, like they have on multiple occasions this season, tied the match late in the second half with around 8:00 to go off a goal from Rivas, his second goal of the night.
Seniors for the McClain Tigers included: Sam Henry, Ryan Case, Luis Rivas, Trevor Figgins, Jimmy Free, Trey Lytle, Jarred White, Caleb Savage and Kaleb Osceola.
"The seniors played with all heart. We played against the Player of the Year in the SE District, and we matched up well against him," Jackson said. "All I can say is all heart tonight. I'm proud of this team."
