Matt’s Take – Reds are running out of time; Bengals thoughts

While it might just be Aug. 4, the Cincinnati Reds are truly running out of time to figure it out. Series after series, they are failing to cash in on bases loaded or runners on with no outs.
They are lacking power at the plate, and Francona loves “small ball.” If they are going to continue to play in this manner, Francona has to change his ways and allow this team to steal bases. At 58-54 and 4 games back from the Padres, they have to start a streak now or they might find themselves out of the race in a hurry.
Let’s dive in…
The Reds have the third best record in the National League since June 1. If they continue at that rate, they still will likely miss the playoffs. An 8-game win streak feels like it is needed at some point.
The Reds have lost six series this season to teams that are 15 games below .500. Unacceptable!
If Austin Hays is going to bat cleanup for this roster, he has to be better behind Elly.
Will Benson down to AAA? The one guy with pop in his bat? Why did this organization not trade him, Lux or Fraley? We have 3 outfielders that are left-handed. Inexcusable to keep all 3.
Why is Espinal still on this roster with the addition of Hayes? We have a good defender at third. This team needs someone who can hit the ball. Too late to trade now.
Positive Reds news and Bengals thoughts
Hunter Greene will soon join this rotation again, forcing another to the bullpen (Martinez with the deadline addition of Littell and Burns I’d say if everyone is healthy).
The Bengals preseason begins this Thursday against the Eagles. No slow starts: Let the starters play. Let’s see if the organization has learned its lesson.
The weather truly ruined the Speedway Classic. If they would’ve had better weather, I think it would’ve been a success (I just don’t enjoy racing).
Ke’Bryan Hayes appears to be thriving in his new environment. I think Reds Country will grow to really like him in a Reds uniform.
Shemar Stewart will end up being special on this defense. Save this column, he will be a beloved Bengal by year two. He will make waves on this team in his first season. He’s too athletic to not make an immediate impact.
The Reds have 21 games remaining against teams in front of them in the National League. However, we know their struggles against divisional opponents. That has to change.
