MAC Baseball: Rockets blast off against Redhawks

     CHILLICOTHE - The No. 6 seeded Miami Redhawks couldn't catch a break and everything went the way of the the Toledo Rockets Wednesday in game two of the Mid-American Conference baseball tournament. The Rockets pounded out 15 hits and played excellent defense to gain a 7-1 victory, moving on in the winners bracket of the MAC tourney.
     Though the Redhawks led early after scoring a run in the top of the second inning, it was a three-run third inning by the No. 3 seeded Rockets that blasted them into the winners bracket.
     The three-run inning began with junior Chris Dudics reaching the bases and being knocked in via home run over the centerfield fence by senior Tim Krofcheck. With one out, sophomore Joe Corfman walked and later in the inning junior Dan Sherwood singled up the middle to bring home the third run of the inning.
     Miami's lone run in the second inning started off wth junior Ryan Kaup leading off the inning with a double to the right field fence. He scored on a fielders choice at second base.
     Toledo added one run in the bottom of the fourth with senior Josh Wierzba crossing home off a ground out to the short stop by junior Jared Hoying.
     UT put another run on the scoredboard in the fifth with senior Aaron Dudley. The senior, who was batting .341 before the tournament, doubled down the first base line, past a diving first baseman. Dudley scored on an RBI double to the centerfield fence by junior Dan Sherwood to make the score 5-1.
     The final two runs of the game came when the Redhawks used three pitchers, against the same amount of batters in the bottom of the eighth.
     With one out Krofcheck singled and after the second out was recorded, Corfman walked. Both runners scored on a double by sophomore Matt Delewski.
     Miami gained five hits in the game.
     Matt Suschak was the winning pitcher. The junior, who was 4-1 this season, allowed one earned run on five hits and four walks. Suschak had six strikeouts in 6 1-3 innings. Kyle Shaw pitched 2 2-3 innings of relief for the Rockets.
     The Redhawks used five pitchers in the game.
     Toledo will take on game three winner Eastern Michigan (who defeated Kent State 10-4) Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at VA Memorial, in Chillicothe.
     Miami will face Kent State at 9 a.m. Thursday.
