Lynchburg-Clay wins league opener

PEEBLES — The Lynchburg-Clay boys soccer team were winners Wednesday, their third straight win, defeating the Peebles Indians 3-2 at PHS in the Mustangs' Southern Hills League opener.
Mustang coach Dennis West said this was a game with tournament intensity.
"We had excellent play from both teams, and I can't say enough about our defense, outside the seven-minute span when Peebles scored," West said. "They were solid, and this was also our best offensive effort of the season."
LC (1-0, 3-0) led by one goal, 1-0, at halftime when Wes Pierson scored from 16 yards out with 29:28 left in the opening 40 minutes.
The Mustangs took a two-goal lead when Alex Pinkerton scored off a pass from Gage Waits with 38:32 left in the second half.
Then the match got interesting, as Peebles tied the match with two consecutive goals from Joshua Denzik (37:54) off a cross kick and Stone Crothers (30:18) when he beat the defense.
If the game wasn't tense enough … the final minute was just as exciting.
It was Pierson, a senior, who put the Mustangs ahead with just 5 seconds remaining with a kick from 20 yards out, breaking the tie for the win.
"The team played hard until the final second, and (Wednesday) it paid off," West said.
Peebles out-shot LC 22-13 with LC keeper Matthew West gaining 13 saves and Tyler Gray (PHS) gaining seven saves.
