Let's talk football

One of my favorite lines in the movie “Remember the Titans” is when Coach Yoast and Coach Boone are in a hallway right before they decide to enter the season as a coaching tandem and one says, “Let’s talk football.”
Then the other answers, “Let’s talk football.”
I agree. Let’s talk football!
Football season is the best six months of the year. This is the time of year where there is almost always some type of football on TV, or a high school game to go to. Heck, I am watching football right now as I type this column.
This year, Highland County has witnessed an excellent start to the season of high school football with the Hillsboro Indians and McClain Tigers.
The Tigers and Tribe already have matched their win totals from a season ago, and from what I have witnessed thus far, they will surpass those totals.
For the first time in recent years, each team has started the season by winning their first two games.
I haven’t had the opportunity to watch the Indians in person yet in ’09, but I am sure I will have the opportunity within in the next couple weeks.
I have had the privilege to watch the Tigers dominate the Adena Warriors in Week 1 and defeat the Unioto Shermans last week.
The Tigers’ defense has been fun to watch this fall in the first two games. They swarm to the football, gang tackle and don’t get down when things go wrong.
The best hit in the two MHS games came last week at Unioto High School where Zach Matracia leveled the ball carrier, forcing a fumble, allowing Jared Loftis to take the ball 40-plus yards for six points. The hit by Matracia was the type of blast that made everyone in attendance say, OUCH!
The Tigers and Indians will each try to win their third straight game when HHS travels to face Dayton Stebbins and MHS goes on the road to take on the Paint Valley Bearcats.

Another thing about the early high school season is the winning record of the South Central Ohio League.
The SCOL has lost just three games in ’09, losing once in Week 1. Besides HHS and MHS, Clinton-Massie and London are undefeated headed into the third week of football action.
At the start of the season all the SCOL coaches told me the league was balanced and to be the champion everyone would have to knock off the Falcons. I can’t wait for week three and the following seven weeks of games. It should be an interesting battle for the league title.
