LC overcomes rocky start, defeats Lady Warriors

DODSONVILLE — Starting the game with just six points in the first quarter wasn't too much for the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs to overcome on Monday. In fact, they held their opponent Eastern Brown to five points in the second, en route to a 61-52 Southern Hills League win at LCHS.
LC (7-4, 12-5) was outscored 16-6 in the first half and rallied back in the second frame to outscore their opponent 17-5 for a halftime lead of 23-21.
The Lady Mustangs added to their lead in the third with a 15-12 quarter, and in the final eight minutes, they outscored the visiting Lady Warriors 23-19 for the league win.
In the 23-point fourth quarter, LC shot 77 percent, and for the game they finished at 39 percent from the field.
Leading LC was junior Laney Lewis with a team-high 22 points. Lewis added 16 rebounds (four offensive), seven blocked shots, five assists and one steal. She was 50 percent from the free-throw line at 7-of-14 and made one 3-pointer.
Senior teammate Brooke Hertlein followed with 17 points, including a 3-pointer and a 6-of-8 effort from the free-throw line. Hertlein added eight rebounds, two blocked shots, one steal and one assist to her totals on Monday.
Emma Setty scored eight points (one rebound, one blocked shot), and Madysyn Creighton scored seven points with two rebounds and one assist. Karen Hilt added five points (one 3-pointer) while tallying four rebounds, one steal and one assist. Freshman Morgan Fittro scored two points (one rebound, one steal).

EB, with the loss, falls to 7-4 in the SHL and 8-7 overall.
The Lady Mustangs will play again on Thursday, Feb. 2 as they travel to face Peebles.
