Late runs lead to SCOL win for Lady Tigers

GREENFIELD — Two runs in the seventh inning were enough for the McClain Lady Tigers to complete a 7-6 South Central Ohio League comeback win over the Washington Lady Blue Lions, Thursday at Daryle Unger Field at Mitchell Park.
The two-run seventh began with Jenna Perie hitting a double, followed by a sacrifice by Morgan Dettwiller. Kate Crabtree hit a one-out RBI single to score Perie.
Following a single by Sasha Lawwell, Alli Willett hit the game-winning two-out RBI single, scoring Crabtree to put MHS up 7-6.
"We don't quit, we don't give up, It's something we have done all year," MHS head coach Jarrod Haines said. "It's just what we do … we battle."
The Lady Tigers ended the bottom half of the seventh and the game by forcing the Lady Blue Lions to leave two base runners stranded for the win.
Washington began the game with one run in the first, followed by a two-run third and three-run fourth for their six total runs.
As for the Lady Tigers their first run was scored in the third inning when Willett walked, scoring on a two-out base hit by senior Frankie Wise.
In the fourth, the Lady Tigers scored on a base hit by Crabtree, sending Perie to home plate, who took the bases on a single.
In the sixth, MHS added three runs to their total with Morgan Dettwiller, Lawwell and Brittany Mullikin all scoring runs.
The sixth began with a walk by Dettwiller, followed by a run-scoring one-out single by Lawwell. Mullikin knocked in Lawwell with a single. The last run of the sixth was scored when Mullikin rounded the bases on a two-out single by Wise.
Wise, Perie, Crabtree and Lawwell all had two hits. Mullikin and Willett each had one hit against the Lady Blue Lions.
"We had some girls hit the ball real hard tonight," Haines said. "Frankie, Kate, Sasha and Jenna really stepped up when they needed to."
The win was credited to Cierra Landrum in the circle, who entered the game as pitcher in the fourth inning. Megan Dettwiller started the game for MHS.
The Lady Tigers tallied five doubles in the SCOL contest. The Lady Blue Lions had two errors, and MHS had four errors, including two in the first inning and two in the fourth.
"Megan (Dettwiller) struggled a little with her control," Haines said. "Cierra came in and kept Washington off-balanced … getting the job done. Our defense still struggles to make the routine plays, as we have to continue to work on our defense."
McClain celebrated their two seniors Frankie Wise and Megan Dettwiller before the game.
"Megan and Frankie are perfect kids you want to lead your team. They have done everything asked of them and then some. We are truly going to miss their heart and hard work that they bring every day," Haines said.
The win improves 12-4 overall and 8-1 in the SCOL.[[In-content Ad]]
