Late runs lead Lady Tigers to 10th straight win

GREENFIELD - Neither team could hold on to the lead Wednesday when the McClain Lady Tigers and Madison-Plains Lady Golden Eagles faced off in their final South Central Ohio League game of the season. In the end, it was MHS who scored the game-tying and game-winning runs in the bottom of the seventh for an 11-10 victory.
The win was the Lady Tigers' 10th in a row, finishing their SCOL slate at 8-4. The final out was sealed with a strikeout forced by Megan Dettwiller.
The game-winning inning, in the bottom of the seventh, began with Kate Crabtree walking and Cortney Hyer reaching the bases with a single. Megan Dettwiller hit a double to score Crabtree, and Kate Hammond hit an RBI single to score Hyer.
"The girls stepped up when we needed to," MHS head coach Jarrod Haines said. "Kate (Crabtree) had a huge walk, and Cortney's base hit was big for us. We knew Kate (Hammond) was going to do what she does, and she came through for us."
McClain struck first with a run in the third inning. Frankie Wise led off with a triple and scored on an RBI sacrifice fly to left field for the run.
MHS added to their total in their half of the third, scoring three runs in the inning.
Hyer forced a walk and with one out scored on a RBI single by Hammond. With two outs, Sasha Lawwell walked, and Alex Taylor also forced a base on balls. Hammond eventually scored in the inning by crossing home plate, and Brittany Mullikin singled in Taylor.
The Lady Golden Eagles came back with one run in the fourth and another run in the top of the fifth.
MHS answered with a run in their part of the fifth for a 5-2 advantage.
Wise, with one out, reached on an error and scored with a RBI from Mullikin.
MP collected five runs in the sixth, but MHS answered with four of their own in their half of the inning.
"We can't lose focus, and for some reason (Wednesday) we lost it," Haines said. "We jumped up on them early, but Madison-Plains kept chipping away and had a big sixth inning on us."
Crabtree walked, and with one out, Megan Dettwiller singled. Hammond reached on an error and Lawwell forced a walk. Taylor knocked in two runners with a ground-out. Mullikin also singled in the inning. Scoring runs were Crabtree, Dettwiller, Hammond and Lawwell.
MP kept battling with the Lady Tigers, taking the lead in the top of the seventh with three runs.
At the plate, Hammond had three hits, two runs and two RBIs.
MHS stands at 12-10 overall, 8-4 in the SCOL.
