Lady Tigers win SCOL girls golf championship

SPRINGFIELD — The McClain Lady Tigers had everything go their way on Saturday, and with their play, along with a couple other series of events, they became the 2011 South Central Ohio League girls golf champions.
Not only did the Lady Tigers have to outscore everyone Saturday, the Clinton-Massie Lady Falcons had to come in second.
Both happened Saturday as McClain scored 388, the lowest score of all the teams at Locust Hills Golf Course.
After the Lady Tigers did what they needed to do, the remaining elements of the scenario happened as well.
At the end of play, Hillsboro (who went undefeated in the SCOL regular season) and Clinton-Massie were tied at 400. The tiebreaker was the fifth score for both teams, and Clinton-Massie's fifth score was two strokes better than Hillsboro's, putting the Lady Indians in third place and CM in second.
Everything went the Lady Tigers' way.
"I think this has been the closest championship we have had in a long time. Hillsboro has been the team to beat for a while now. Hillsboro has dominated our league for a couple of years now," MHS coach Tracey Cokonougher said. "Coach (Sue) Hunter always has her team prepared. They shoot well, and are great competitors.
"The coaches and young ladies in our league have worked hard and have improved since the beginning of the season. Everyone wants to be on top, and Saturday was our day to be there."
In the 18-hole match, Brittany Massie led MHS with a score of 94, followed by a 95 from Morgan Dettwiller. Shania Massie had a 98, and Savannah Olaker scored a 101. Also scoring for MHS were Kaylee Smith at 131 and Taylor Rogers at 135.
Scores for Clinton-Massie were: Alex Merriman 90, Molly Scroggy 102, Madison Phelps 104, Lacy Myers 104, Lily Heyob 106 and Briana Dearing 114.
Hillsboro finished with scores including: Carey Juillerat 97, Arden Knauff 98, Hayley Wehrung 99, Haleigh Lovett 106, Hailee Allen 108 and Jordan Elmore 114.
Miami Trace finished in fourth place with a score of 438 with their low score being Abby Hidy at 100.
For the fifth-place Madison-Plains Lady Golden Eagles, who totaled 456, their low score was Kaylin Dill at 102.
All teams will compete in their Sectional Tournaments on Monday, Sept. 26. McClain, Hillsboro, and Miami Trace will be playing their Sectional Tournament Match at Upper Lansdowne Golf Course just outside of Circleville.
