GREENFIELD - The McClain Lady Tigers found some magic Friday evening as they defeated South Central Ohio League foe Washington 15-5 in Greenfield.
McClain started off with textbook pitching in the top of the first when junior pitcher Megan Dettwiller put the Lady Lions down in order. Dettwiller had two strikeouts and a ground out in the inning.
The Lady Tigers got things started at the plate in the bottom part of the same inning as senior leadoff hitter Cortney Hyer drew a walk. Dettwiller then helped her cause as she hit a run-scoring triple to the gap, bringing home Hyer.
Dettwiller scored on a wild pitch, and Jenna Perie reached base on an error. Sasha Lawwell stepped to the plate and smashed a single to left field. Perie then scored on a wild pitch.
In the second inning, the Lady Blue Lions struck as they answered back with four runs of their own.
With their backs against the wall, the Lady Tigers came out swinging.
Kate Crabtree led off with a single, scoring on a triple by Hyer. Megan Dettwiller plated Hyer on a double.
Kate Hammond took the bases after being hit by a pitch, and Jenna Perie drew a walk. With the bases, jammed Alex Taylor brought everyone home with a grand slam.
The Lady Blue Lions scored one more in the third.
Megan Dettwiller was replaced in the circle as the Lady Tigers made a call to the bull pen. Ashley Green kept Washington at bay as she threw three scoreless innings.
"We had our backs against the wall. We were 1-6 and looking for a break. Our seniors showed great leadership, and we finally turned in a great offensive game," MHS head coach Jarrod Haines said.
For the Lady Tigers at the plate, Hyer was perfect as she was 3-for-3 with a walk, three runs and three RBIs. Megan Dettwiller went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs. Hammond was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and one run. Lawwell was 2-for-4 with one run. Taylor finished 2-for-4 with five RBIs and two runs. Frankie Wise was 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Crabtree went 2-for-3 and scored three runs. Crabtree turned two double plays to follow up her great perfomance at the plate.
"Alex Taylor, Ashley Green, Cortney Hyer and Kate Hammond won this game for us," Haines said. "They did what seniors should do. They showed great leadersip and got the job done. Sasha Lawwell and Kate Crabtree got their bats working, and this will only help us down the road."[[In-content Ad]]
