Lady Tigers prevail in OT against Falcons

GREENFIELD — This season, McClain head coach Dennis Overstake has talked about players stepping up in big games. On Saturday afternoon at McClain High School, that is exactly what happened for the Lady Tigers.
Starting the day two games out of the South Central Ohio League lead, the Lady Tigers (5-2, 9-4) couldn't afford another loss. After trailing late in the fourth frame, and in OT, timely 3-pointers by Frankie Wise, along with clutch free throws from Kate Crabtree and defense by the rest of the Lady Tigers, gave MHS a 41-39 SCOL win.
"For us to stay in contention for the league title, we had to get this win. We still have to take care of our business but will need help from someone else in the league," Overstake said. "We are still two games out, and we have to win out to have a chance."
Earlier this season, the Lady Falcons defeated MHS 44-28 by using defense and holding MHS scoreless in the third quarter at CM. That wasn't the case this time around.
The score was tied at 22 as the fourth frame opened up, and MHS was the first to take the lead with a free throw by Cobb.
Each team then took turns gaining and regaining the lead with Massie's Sydney Brockmeyer connecting with a long-range jumper, followed with McClain's Kate Crabtree making a put-back basket. Brockmeyer finished with 14 points, tied for the game-high.
CM took the lead again, this time with two points by Brooke Sargent at the 4:35 mark of the quarter. Brittany Mullikin tied the game at 26 with a free throw with 3:57 left in regulation.
CM built a 33-29 lead with points from Jordanne Gambill and Sargent, leaving 2:29 in the fourth. Gambill finished with nine points.
Wise made a clutch 3-pointer from the top of the arc to bring MHS within one point at the 1:30 mark of the fourth. After CM took a two-point lead, Cobb sank a bucket with 1:05 remaining, sending the game into overtime.
In OT, the Lady Tigers were first to score with points by Crabtree, with the assist from Cobb at the 3:10 mark of the period. Brockmeyer tied the game at 3:06 and CM took the lead with a jumper by Kasey Uetrecht.
It was Wise, again, who came up big, this time with a 3-pointer to put MHS in the lead (39-38) with .46 seconds remaining in OT. After a series of timeouts and a CM turnover, the Lady Falcons regained their composure and tied the score at 39 with a free throw from Brockmeyer with 8.9 seconds on the clock.
MHS took the lead for good when Crabtree was fouled on the ensuing possession with the score tied. Crabtree put MHS ahead with two free throws. MHS fended off one last opportunity by CM when Taylor Faulconer stole a CM pass. When the game was over, her teammates celebrated with her on the court.
"Though our free throw shooting was 14-of-20, Kate (Crabtree) made some big free throws at the end, and Frankie (Wise) was 3-of-3 in 3-pointers," Overstake said. "The steals we had late were key in the game. We had more people step up, and that's what we have been talking about."
Crabtree finished tied for the game-high in scoring with 14 points. She was 6-of-6 from the free throw line, along with three steals and two rebounds.
Cobb finished with 12 points, four assists, three rebounds and two steals.
Though MHS came out victorious, it was the Lady Falcons who led after the first frame at 11-6. CM (5-2, 10-3) began the game with a 5-0 run, then took a 7-2 lead with 4:35 left in the quarter.
A jumper by Jenna Perie put MHS within one point of tying the game at 7-6, but CM ended the quarter with four straight points for their five-point lead after eight minutes.
Wise, who tallied nine points, began the second quarter with her first 3-pointer, but points by Brockmeyer and Brianna Machado gave CM a 15-9 advantage. Cobb answered four straight points, including one bucket off a pass by Megan Hogle to put MHS within two points of tying the score with 3:52 left in the quarter.
Once CM regained possession of the basketball, the game slowed down. In fact, it went to a complete stop. As neither team would break their offensive or defensive schemes, time on the clock just ticked away. Still in possession of the basketball and in the same spot, the Lady Falcons called a timeout with 12.2 left in the quarter. Following the timeout, CM was forced into a turnover with Brittany Mullikin stealing the ball to end the first half with CM up 15-13.
With MHS on the verge of getting into foul trouble in the second quarter, the total stop in action the game took was a blessing in disguise for the Lady Tigers.
"That helped us," Overstake said of the way CM stopped their offensive attack. "They didn't score in that time, and we went into the locker room down by two."
MHS outscored CM 9-7 in the third frame, as the game was tied at 22 when the game went into the aforementioned final quarter.
Also for MHS, Perie led with five rebounds, while Mullikin followed with four. CM grabbed 24 total boards (MHS 15).
"Coach (Allen) Wilkerson had his girls prepared, and they did a good job," Overstake said. "They were hard to defend in their zone defense."
Overstake also praised not only his team, but his coaching staff.
"Coach Haines, Gall and Branham were very involved with our decision-making in this game," he said. "Our girls played hard, and they stepped up."
The win lifts MHS to 5-2 in the SCOL and 9-4 overall. CM is 5-2 in the SCOL and 10-3 overall.
MHS is scheduled to face the Madison-Plains Lady Golden Eagles on Tuesday at MPHS.
MHS fell in JV action to CM, 41-30. Brittni Holman led CM with 11 points. Tara Karnes led MHS with a game-high 12 points.
