GREENFIELD – Finally able to take the field after numerous weather postponements, the McClain Lady Tigers didn't let up for seven innings, run-ruling the Miami Trace Lady Panthers, 9-0 Thursday at Daryle C. Unger Field in Greenfield.
The Lady Tigers tallied 11 hits and three walks against their South Central Ohio League counterpart.
MHS (5-1, 9-5) began their scoring with four runs in the first inning, followed by one run in the fourth and capping off the game with four runs in the sixth.
"The girls bounced back (after numerous rainouts) and played really well," MHS head coach Jarrod Haines said. "Defensively, after the layoff, we played good enough."
The second inning for MHS began with Brittany Mullikin forcing a walk on a full count. After the first out was recorded, Sasha Lawwell sent the ball over the fence with a two-run home run.
Leading 2-0, Alli Willett reached the bases on an error and scored on a triple by Frankie Wise. Cierra Landrum, who was 1-for-3, sent Wise home by taking first on an error.
"Frankie had a really good day at the plate," Haines said. "That's big leadership by her."
After the second inning, the Lady Tigers led 4-0. That turned out to be more than enough runs, but McClain decided to add to their overall total in the fourth.
MHS took a five-run lead with Wise reaching the bases on a one-out double. She scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by Megan Dettwiller. Dettwiller finished the game 2-for-3 with four RBIs.
The Lady Tigers capped off the game in the sixth with four runs.
Katie Unger reached the bases first for MHS in the sixth with a double, followed by Wise forcing a walk. The bases were loaded with a walk forced by Landrum. Both Unger and Wise crossed home plate on a double from Dettwiller. Jenna Perie, who finished 3-for-4, knocked in Landrum and Kate Crabtree plated Dettwiller.
"It seems once we get some runs on the board, we just keep getting hits," Haines said.
The win went to Dettwiller, who pitched six innings in the circle. She finished with five strikeouts. Also pitching for MHS was Landrum.
"Megan and Cierra pitched well," Haines said.
Also gaining a hit for MHS was Morgan Dettwiller.
McClain stays in first place in the SCOL, with a 5-1 record. They are 9-5 overall this season.
MHS is scheduled to play Miami Trace again on Friday in another SCOL game.
