Lady Tigers hold on for SCOL win at MP

MT. STERLING — Stopping a Madison-Plains rally when it mattered the most, the McClain Lady Tigers stayed mathematically in the race for the South Central Ohio League title on Saturday, defeating the Madison-Plains Lady Golden Eagles 49-43 at MPHS.
The road win by MHS (12-5) keeps them in second place in the SCOL standings, tied with the Washington Lady Blue Lions at 7-3 in league play. Both the Lady Blue Lions and Lady Tigers trail the now one-loss (in SCOL play) Clinton-Massie Lady Falcons, who are 9-1 in league games. CM fell to the eight-time defending league champion Miami Trace Lady Panthers, 40-39 on Saturday afternoon.
MHS has two SCOL game remaining when they host CM on Wednesday in a makeup game, and on Feb. 11 when they host MT. CM also has two league games remaining, as they travel to MHS and host the Hillsboro Lady Indians to wrap up the regular season. Washington's remaining league games are home games against London and MP.
As for the Saturday game against MP (4-7, 10-7), the Lady Tigers led by four points following eight minutes at 15-11, but following a 12-9 second frame in favor of the Lady Golden Eagles, McClain's lead was cut to one point at 24-23.
MHS regrouped in the third, scoring 15 points, while holding the host team to a six-point quarter. In the fourth, MHS was held to eight points, but the 14 points by MP wasn't enough to take the game.
The Lady Tigers were led in scoring by senior Sammy Rooks with 18 points, as she scored seven of the eight MHS points in the fourth quarter, including a 3-pointer. Rooks also made a 3-pointer in the second quarter.
Rooks was 4-of-7 from the free-throw line, while adding five rebounds (four offensive) and three steals.
[[In-content Ad]]Freshman Shania Massie followed with 15 points for the Lady Tigers, including eight points in the opening quarter. She scored six points in the third, and one point in the fourth. Massie added eight steals, six rebounds and one assist.
Also scoring for MHS were Taylor Faulconer (5), Kate Crabtree (2), Brittany Mullikin (2), Jenna Perie (3) and Tara Karnes (2).
Faulconer added four rebounds, one steal and one assist to her overall totals. Crabtree tallied two rebounds and one blocked shot, while Mullikin had two rebounds and one steal. Perie collected five rebounds, three assists and two steals.
For the game, MHS tallied 24 rebounds (12 offensive), as MP totaled 10 boards.
Leading MP in scoring was Kelsey Woodyard with 15 points, and Casey Knisley with 14.
MHS will play again on Monday when they host Eastern Beaver (a non-league game), with JV play starting at 6 p.m. MP is scheduled to play again on Wednesday (Feb. 8) when they host West Jefferson in non-league play.
