Lady Tigers gain SCOL win; defeat LHS

GREENFIELD — The McClain Lady Tigers defeated the London Lady Red Raiders Wednesday evening at Daryle C. Unger Field, 12-5, opening the South Central Ohio League softball slate in Greenfield.
The Lady Tigers scored first in the bottom of the thrid as freshman Alli Willett started the inning with a one-out walk. She was singled to second by senior Frankie Wise. Both runners advanced a base by a Megan Dettwiller groundout.
Willet scored on a sizzling line drive to left field by junior Jenna Perie. Wise and Perie scored one pitch later, as Brittany Mullikin smashed a double to the right-field gap.
London answered in the top of the fourth, scoring three runs.
MHS went scoreless in the fourth inning, and the Lady Red Raiders plated two more runs in the top of the fifth for a 5-3 lead over MHS.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Lady Tigers added two runs as Wise singled, then scored on a Megan Dettwiller base hit. Dettwiller scored on a single hit by Perie.
With the game tied at five, the Lady Tigers turned a double play in the top of the sixth and retired LHS in order.
The sixth inning proved to be the difference for MHS, as they posted seven runs.
Sasha Lawwell led the inning with a double. Morgan Dettwiller followed by forcing a walk. Pinch-hitter Emily Sterling smoked a double, scoring Lawwell. Wise reached first with a base hit, and Megan Dettwiller singled, knocking in Morgan Dettwiller.
Sterling and Wise scored on a Perie double. Mullikin plated Megan Dettwiller with a groundout, and Kate Crabtree hit a home run over the centerfield fence to score Perie.
"Right now, we are swinging the bats very well. It's tough to make a lineup because we have so many girls that can hit," MHS head coach Jarrod Haines said. "We still need to work on our defense and communication on fly balls. We can't keep giving teams second chances."
Cierra Landrum (4-1) picked up the win for McClain. She pitched seven innings, giving up five runs (four earned) on nine hits and two walks, while striking out five.
"Cierra started really well holding (London) hitless for three innings," Haines said. "I think she got tired in the fourth, but she has thrown a lot of innings for us (nine in the previous game), and she battled and finished strong."
Finishing at the plate for MHS were Perie going 4-for-4, Wise, 3-for-4 and Megan Dettwiller, 2-for-4. Mullikin, Crabtree, Landrum, Lawwell, Morgan Dettwiller and Emily Sterling each had one hit.
"Every spot in the lineup got a hit tonight," Haines said. "I can't say enough about Jenna right now, she is stinging the ball. I hope we can keep hitting like this for the rest of the year."[[In-content Ad]]
