Lady Tigers earn 2nd win of season

GREENFIELD — The McClain Lady Tigers earned their second consecutive win Monday evening, defeating the Fairfield Lady Lions in convincing fashion, 7-2, using a second-half outburst of scoring to gain the home, non-league win at McClain Field.
The highlight of the night was McClain senior Sammy Rooks scoring three goals for the hat trick.
"Sammy's play was wonderful," McClain coach Luis Rivas said. "This game builds her confidence."
MHS has two wins at home this season, lifting their overall record to 2-2 overall.
McClain was the first to score with Rooks scoring a goal at the 15:00 mark of the opening half.
The match was tied at 1-1 when Fairfield's Lindsey Bernard put the ball in the back of the net with 11:53 remaining in the first 40 minutes of play.
"I was pleased with how we played in the first half. We need to learn how to play in the second half like we do in the first half," Fairfield coach Amy Cox said. "We had a couple girls get hurt in the game, and that took away some substation chances for us. The good thing is they returned, but we were just tired in the second half."
Again, it was Rooks and Bernard exchanging goals when Rooks gave MHS the lead for the second time at the 10:15 mark, but Bernard tied the game on a penalty kick with 2:06 left in the opening half.
"We were flat defensively in the first half," Rivas said. "But this game is a confidence booster for the whole team."
Once the second half was complete the Lady Lions ran out of steam due to their overall depth, and the Lady Tigers continued to roll, scoring five times for the victory over one of their county rivals.
"Once our opponent gets the lead, we get down," Cox said. "We lost energy. One plus was the play of Kylie Allen. She really stepped up her play."
McClain's Megan Mustard put the Lady Tigers in the lead for good with a goal at the 23:06 mark of the second half for a 3-2 advantage.
Rooks gained the hat-trick with 15:26 left in the match, making the score 4-2.
Lauren Starkey scored two of the final three McClain goals with her goals coming at the 8:32 mark and with 6.6 seconds left in the match. One of her goals came at an angle on a direct kick.
In between those two goals, Kaitlyn Faulconer put the ball into the net with 6:20 left on the scoreboard clock.
