Lady Panthers fend off Hillsboro

EBER — Miami Trace's defense made everything more difficult for the Hillsboro Lady Indians on Wednesday. Hillsboro was unable to keep possession of the basketball and unable to get open shots as they fell to the Lady Panthers 59-27.
Hillsboro led once in the early stages of their South Central Ohio League game, but from the 5:50 mark of the first quarter until the final buzzer, the game belonged to the Lady Panthers as they improved to 13-3 overall and 6-3 in the SCOL. HHS drops to 1-10 in the SCOL and 3-14 overall.
MT was led by Josie Cobb and Deidre McKay with 14 points each. They were followed by Kristin Reisinger with 10 points.
For Hillsboro, Kaylynn Bell led the Lady Indians with 13 points, all coming in the first half. Trista Rhodes followed with five points.
In the first quarter, Abby Swank was first to score for the Lady Panthers, but HHS responded with a free throw by Bell at the 6:19 mark of the first frame. Bell followed with a rebound off a missed free throw, scoring put-back points for an HHS lead of 3-2 with 6:10 left on the clock.
But that was as close as HHS would get to playing even with the Lady Panthers as MT went on a 15-0 run from the 5:50 mark of the first until there was 2:35 left on the scoreboard for a 17-3 lead. Cobb started the run with a 3-pointer, followed by a steal and layup. Also contributing to the run were McKay, Abby Schwenk, Ariana Mabra and Reisinger.
Bell broke up the run with a layup and free throw for a three-point play with 2:28 left on the clock. Carey Juillerat scored a put-back bucket with 49 seconds left in the first quarter.
"We didn't take care of the basketball, but that's due in large part because we didn't move without the basketball," HHS head coach JR Moberly said. "We had kids getting stuck with nobody to throw it to.
"Miami Trace is bigger than us, stronger than us and have invested more time in the weight room than us. I'm not knocking our kids … it's the truth. Our kids can get to that point. They paid attention to what was happening on the court … they looked at some of Trace's kids and realized the weight room is going to be a good idea for us."
Once the second frame ended, the Lady Indians trailed 30-17. Bell added seven points for HHS in the quarter. Also scoring for HHS in the quarter was Taylor Moberly.
"Our kids realized we need to shoot the basketball better, and they realized the gym is going to be a good idea," Moberly said. "Hopefully we can do some good things over the summer, and we won't have to look at this a lot next year.
"I'm not displeased with the effort of some of our kids, but quite honestly, we didn't play well (Wednesday). We didn't play with the energy that I want, and we didn't coach well tonight or this week, obviously, to prepare us for this game."
MT added 13 points to their lead in the second with Cobb scoring seven points in the quarter, adding her second 3-pointer of the game. Mabra and Reisinger combined for six points in the quarter.
The Lady Panthers outscored HHS 24- 10 in the second half with MT leading the third 11-2 and the fourth, 18-8.
Scoring for HHS in the second half were Madison Colliver, Taylor Stanforth, Rhodes and Hannah Kibler.
[[In-content Ad]]"I'm disappointed, and the kids are disappointed too," Moberly said. "We dug ourselves a hole, had an emotional day on Saturday (played Madison-Plains). In that game we battled back … it's hard to play an emotional game on Saturday and come back out and try to duplicate that energy.
"Hopefully we got that out of our system, and we'll be ready to play on Saturday."
In JV play, MT defeated HHS, 34-20. Leading HHS were Alyssa Sullivan, Stanforth and Brittany Bowen each with four points. Ashley Henry led MT with 21 points, making seven 3-pointers.
HHS will play again this Saturday in a non-league game at East Clinton. MT will also play again on Saturday, hosting the SCOL-leading Clinton-Massie Lady Falcons.
Following their game this Saturday, HHS will travel to Goshen on Feb. 7 and end the regular season at CM on Feb. 11.
MT has games remaining with CM (Feb. 4) and at McClain on Feb. 11.
