Lady Mustangs wrap up regular season with 6-1 win

     PEEBLES – The Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs wrapped up their regular season slate of games last Wednesday as they took down Southern Hills League rival Peebles 6-1 at PHS.

     The Lady Mustangs finish the regular season at 8-6-1 overall, 4-3 in league action.

     L-C led 2-0 at the half.

     The first goal of the game came off a kick from 20 yards out when sophomore Karen Hilt netted the goal wit 25:01 remaining in the first half.

     Senior Alex Baker gave L-C a two-goal advantage with a goal at the 7:58 mark of the same half, with the assist credited to Meredith Fittro.

     The Lady Mustangs increased their level of play in the second half, scoring four goals.

     Hilt netted her second goal of the game with 29:30 as she beat the Peebles defense for the 3-0 lead.

     Baker also scored her second goal of the game with 26:41 in the second half, with Hilt passing the ball to Baker on a cross kick.

     With 6:18 left in the game, Erin Rowlands scored off a rebound, and the final goal came with 1:44 as Fittro netted a goal with a 15-yard kick off a deflection.

     The lone goal for Peebles came with 21:30 mark of the second half from Tabitha Wheeler.

     Junior keeper Shelbi Halverson had four saves in 80 minutes of play for L-C. The Lady Mustangs out shot Peebles 22-4.

     “The girls played a very good match in miserable weather,” L-C coach Dennis West said. “Alex (Baker) returned after missing our last three matches due to an injury and she really helped our offense.”

     The next game for the Lady Mustangs will be Monday, Oct. 19 against West Union at 5 p.m.
