PEEBLES — The red-hot start by the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs continued on Wednesday as they defeated the Peebles Lady Indians 6-1 in the Southern Hills League opener at Peebles High School.

For the second time this season, Brandi Hunter gained the hat-trick, scoring three goals, two in the second half. Hunter has 10 goals in five games this season.

LC led 2-1 at the half, as they trailed for a portion of the first half when Peebles' Taylor Brown scored the first goal with 22:58 left on the clock, which was the first goal allowed by the LC defense this season.

Taylor Scott tied the game at 1-1 with 6:30 remaining in the opening 40 minutes off a cross kick by Hunter for the assist. The Lady Mustangs took the lead with 47 seconds left in the half when Hunter beat the defense of the Lady Indians for the 2-1 lead.

"This was a very even game in the first half," LC coach Dennis West said. "We kept the pressure on in the second half and took control."

The Lady Mustangs (1-0, 5-0) added to their lead in the second half with Hunter scoring with a pass from Karen Hilt with 36:40 left on the clock.

After an own goal by Peebles (30:30), Hunter scored her third and final goal of the match with 13:04, beating the PHS defense for the second time.

Scott scored the final goal of the match (her second) with 52 seconds to seal the win. Sydney Cromer had the assist.

Emma Setty finished with three saves, and Peebles' Liz Fulton also had five saves as LC out-shot PHS 21-6.

"Our defense played hard the entire match, and this was a good match to start the league with," West said.[[In-content Ad]]
