Lady Mustangs improve to 4-0 overall

DODSONVILLE — Since their season opener where the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs won by 15 goals, the scoring and wins haven't stopped as they have started the season with four straight wins, including winning the past three matches with wins over Miami Trace, Fairfield and Ripley.
LC defeated the MT Lady Panthers 9-0 at Miami Trace High School on Monday, Aug. 29.
This season, LC has scored 40 goals in four games, and their defense hasn't allowed a single goal this season.
"We continue to play excellent defense," LC coach Dennis West said. "Our offense sometimes struggles to finish after moving the ball into the 18-yard area.
"We are much more efficient in the second half. The team is playing very good soccer as we start the league schedule."
Against MT, the Lady Mustangs (4-0) scored two first-half goals and seven goals in the final 40 minutes.
In the first half, both LC goals came from Brandi Hunter at the 29:16 mark and with 1:20 left in the first 40 minutes of play. Both goals were assisted off passes by Taylor Scott.
In the second half, senior Brooke Hertlein made the score 3-0 with a kick from 15 yards for the goal, leaving 37:44 left in the match.
Senior Karen Hilt followed with a goal by beating the Lady Panther defense at 36:57.
Scott gave LC a five-goal lead with 29:39 left in the match off a cross kick from Keanna Oaks.
Hilt scored her second goal, with 28:21 remaining, with the assist from Sydney Cromer.
The scoring continued when MyKenzie Reynolds made it a seven-goal lead with an 18-yard kick (14:22).
Hannah West scored her first goal of the match with 12:23 left on an 18-yard kick, and Morgan Fittro made it a 9-0 score with 40 seconds left on the clock on a 12-yard kick for a goal.
LC keeper Bree Gragg had five saves, and MT keeper Perkins had 21 saves. LC out-shot the home team 41-7.
On Saturday, Aug. 27, the Lady Mustangs defeated the Fairfield Lady Lions 9-0.
LC scored five goals in the first half and four in the second half.
Hunter began the scoring with a goal, on a cross kick from Hilt, with 31:36 left in the half.
Hertlein followed with a goal (24:30) from a 20-yard out. Cromer made it a 3-0 game with 20:19 left in the first on a rebound off the keeper. Oaks added another first-half goal with 2:09 remaining in the first half.
The final first-half goal came with 2:00 when Hilt beat the defense for a five-goal lead.
LC scored four goals in the second half with Oaks, Hilt and two goals from Shelby Stewart for the nine total goals.
Oaks began the second half with a goal with 36:42 off a pass by Scott. Hilt scored her second goal with 30:05 with another assist by Scott on a cross kick.
Stewart's two goals came at 15:20 and 2:35 remaining in the final 40 minutes. Her first goal was assisted by Sarah Spidel, and the second goal came from 15 yards out.
Emma Setty had three saves (FHS had three total shots at goal) for LC. The Mustangs had 45 shots at goal, with Shelby Smithson totaling 20 saves.
"This was a good performance and against a very hard-playing group from Fairfield," West said. "Our players are growing more confident each time we take the field."
On Wednesday, Aug. 24, LC defeated Ripley 7-0 with six second-half goals.
Brandy Hunter scored the lone first-half goal with 6:33 left on the clock.
In the second half, Hilt scored two goals, and Oaks, Fittro, Cromer and Hannah West all scored one goal.
Hilt made the score 2-0 (35:48) off a pass from Scott.
Oaks beat the defense with 34:26 left in the match, and Fittro scored the fourth goal off a pass from Sam Whitenack.
Cromer's goal (17:07) scored with a cross kick from Stewart, and West's goal came at the 4:07 mark of the half with the assist from Sarah Spidel. Hilt scored the final goal with 1:33 remaining in the match.
"We struggled offensively in the first half," West said. "Our defense dominated throughout the match, and in the second half, our offense suddenly became effective."
LC out-shot Ripley 25-2 with Gragg gaining two saves. For RHS, Lydia Hamilton and Tori Boone combined for 14 saves, with Hamilton gaining 10 saves.
