DODSONVILLE – Not allowing the Huntington Lady Huntsmen to score in double figures in any quarter, the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs galloped away Monday night with a 71-22 non-league victory.

The win was the Lady Mustangs’ home opener and they didn’t let down the home crowd. L-C scored 13, 18, 24 and 16 points in each respective quarter.

“We shot well and this was our best offensive game of the year,” Lynchburg-Clay head coach Linda Hatten said. “We had a good, balanced attack. We were really clicking on all cylinders.”

L-C junior Meredith Fittro led all scorers with 16 points. Fittro was 7 of 9 shooting, including two 3-pointers. She was 2 of 2 from the free-throw line.

The Lady Mustangs (2-1, 4-2) allowed just seven first half points, one in the second quarter.

“I told the girls we have to build on our lead and continue to keep getting better. We got down the floor well in the game,” Hatten said. “Huntington bounced around with different defenses, but we played half-court man-to-man and we did pretty well defensively. I can’t say we are up to par on our defense as we play with a lot of hands, but we are improving.”

L-C senior Lindsey Hawk finished with 15 points (two 3-pointers) and sophomore Brooke Hertlein ended the contest with 13 points. Hertlein made five two-point buckets and one 3-point shot. Hawk also added nine assists.

Laney Lewis, who had three steals, and Cali Hatten each scored eight points. Lillian Blankenship finished with six points and Hannah Blankenship had five. Hannah Blankenship also recorded five assists.

Vickers led Huntington with nine points.

The Lady Mustangs had 35 rebounds, with Hannah Blankenship and Hertlein each gaining eight.

L-C was 28 of 48 shooting overall for 58 percent.

The Lady Mustangs travel to Manchester this Thursday with JV starting at 6 p.m.
