Lady Mustangs advance to district finals

DODSONVILLE — The Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs are treating the '11 postseason just like they did the regular season, defeating the Peebles Lady Indians 8-0 on Tuesday in the Division III SE District Semifinal match at LCHS.
This was the third time the Mustangs defeated the Lady Indians this season, with previous wins of 6-1 and 7-0. In their three meetings with PHS, LC has outscored the Lady Indians 21-1. This postseason, LC has outscored their opponents 16-0 as they now have 13 shutouts in 18 matches.
In '11, LC has outscored their opponents 113-9, moving to 16-2 overall. The Lady Mustangs haven't lost to a Division III team all season long.
"Our scoring has been great, but we have a great defense too," LC coach Dennis West said. "I've never had a team with as much depth as this one has.
"The girls play aggressively and are interchangeable. We've had years when we would have one girl to fill in a couple different spots, but this year we have two or three girls who can play in different spots … that is a wonderful feeling to have as a coach when you have that much depth on a team."
On Tuesday, LC led 2-0 at halftime after juniors Taylor Scott and Brandi Hunter each scored a goal. Scott's goal came early at the 37:04 mark of the opening half with the assist from Karen Hilt.
The second goal came with 6:20 left in the same half with Hunter scoring. The assist was credited to Scott.
Neither girl was finished scoring as Hunter finished with three goals for a hat-trick, and Scott ended the match with two goals. Scott has six goals this postseason (two matches).
"We knew Peebles was going to come prepared to play," West said. "We played them twice before, but right now the girls are playing as good as they have all season.
"I was nervous playing a team for a third time in one year, but the girls went out and played hard."
After halftime, the Lady Mustangs turned up their level of play with Hunter scoring on a header with 23:28 left in the match.
Following Hunter's goal, Shelby Stewart scored on a kick to the left side of the net from 15 yards out for a 4-0 lead with 16:50 left on the clock.
After a leaping save by LC keeper Emma Setty around the 15:00 mark, the Lady Mustangs added to their advantage, taking a five-goal lead with Morgan Fittro scoring on a short kick off a rebound with 11:48 left on the scoreboard.
Scott scored her second goal (9:51) on a one-on-one situation, kicking the ball into the left corner of the goal.
Hilt made it a 7-0 score with 7:45 left, and Hunter completed her hat-trick with the nicest goal of the match, kicking the ball over the head of the Peebles keeper, at an angle from 20 yards away, into the right corner of the goal for the eight-goal lead with 5:12 left in the match.
At goal, Setty finished with five saves as the defense of LC allowed PHS to gain just six shots on goal in the 80-minute match. LC finished with 27 shots on goal, as the Peebles keeper finished with 14 saves.
LC, the Southern Hills League champion, will now travel over two hours away as they will face West Muskingum (11-6-1) in Zanesville on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 12 p.m. LC faces WMHS as the winner of the SE Upper 1 winner faces the East Lower 2 winner.
