CHILLICOTHE – For the third year in a row the Hillsboro Lady Indians are Division I SE District sectional champions, as they defeated the Chillicothe Lady Cavaliers 4-2 at J.A. Smith Middle School, in Chillicothe.

Things didn’t start off well for the Lady Indians when Chillicothe took the lead within the first 15 minutes of the game with a goal.

Like they have all season long, Hillsboro played tough, took control of the game, and didn’t hold anything back.

HHS tied the game shortly after the first Chillicothe goal when Leah Pence lifted the ball into the air to teammate Jordan Davis, who tied the game at 1-1 with her first goal of the sectional final.

The Lady Indians then grabbed the lead in the first half with a goal by Pence, who was assisted by senior Heather Storer.

Then in the second half the tough, traditional HHS defense stepped onto the field and took away any chance of a Chillicothe comeback victory.

The defensive effort was led by senior Shelby Coyle, who as in the words of Hillsboro coach Leslie Molen, “played tremendously on defense.”

“Shelby (Coyle) shut down their best player, (their fastest player), and stayed on her the entire game,” Molen said."She had a great game."

The offense for Hillsboro resurfaced in the second half with junior Lauren Colliver using a free kick to assist in a goal by senior Paij Shelton for the third Lady Indian goal.

The final goal, and maybe most impressive, came with Taylor Hauke setting up Davis, who after a few touches, while near the out of bounds line, knocked in her second goal of the game with the ball going into the net at an angle.

“The kick by Jordan (Davis) was amazing,” Molen said. “She was close to the goal, and the ball went right in the net.”

The win lifts the Lady Indians to 12-1-3 overall, with them entering districts.

HHS will face the winner, away, of the Jackson and Marietta game.

“The kids played well and it was a good team win,” Molen said. “We had good effort and I am proud of them.”
