HILLSBORO — The scrimmages and previews are over, and the Hillsboro Lady Indians are back to their old self Saturday, winning the season opener in dominating fashion.
The Lady Indians (1-0) kept the ball away from their own goal for a majority of the game and kept the ball in Eastern Brown (0-1) territory for two first-[half and one second-half goals for a 3-1 non-league win Saturday afternoon at Richards Memorial Field in Hillsboro.
"We played in a three-team scramble Friday so that kind of wore us out," HHS coach Leslie Molen said, who gained her 96th career win at HHS as head coach. "Had we not have played Friday, the intensity level would have been much higher."
Though HHS was unable to make any noise come out of the victory bell following their two-goal win (the clapper was removed from the victory bell), they made all the noise they needed in the first half, scoring twice for a 2-0 lead after the first 40 minutes of the regular season.
The first goal of the season was scored when captain Jordan Davis put the ball inside the net, with the assist by Trista Rhodes.
Hillsboro's second goal came off the foot of Madison Colliver, who scored with the assist from Kaylynn Bell.
In the second half at the 19:56 mark, Hailey Wisman kicked the ball into the left corner of the net from nearly 20 yards out, making it a three-goal advantage.
"I thought we dominated the game and ran very well," Molen said. "Would have liked to see some of our crossing better, but overall our defense played well, and our halfbacks played well.
"Everyone played well, and this was a good team performance."
Hillsboro had the shutout intact until the 1:04 mark of the second half when the Lady Warriors made a goal from about 15 yards away.
Lady Indians keeper Sara Sexton made two big saves in the second half, finishing with eight touches and the aforementioned saves.
Hillsboro stands at 1-0 overall this season. They will play their first South Central Ohio League game on Tuesday, traveling to Miami Trace at 6:45 p.m. On Thursday, Hillsboro will host the Washington Lady Blue Lions at 6:45 p.m, as a SCOL game.[[In-content Ad]]
