Lady Falcons take SCOL win over Lady Tigers
GREENFIELD – After coming back from one set down, the McClain Lady Tigers were unable to keep leads late in the final two sets as they were defeated by South Central Ohio League rival Clinton-Massie in four sets Tuesday.
Clinton-Massie won the first set 25-18, followed with the Lady Tigers tying the match 1-1 with a 25-22 victory in set two. C-M won the final two sets by scores of 25-22 and 25-21.
“We made adjustments for most of their hitters, but they (CMHS) came back with their own adjustments,” McClain coach Emma Gall said. “Clinton-Massie is a good team and played well.”
In the first set McClain senior Taylor Delph scored nine points for the Lady Tigers, followed with junior Kelsey Davis scoring four and senior Megan Saylor with two. For the Lady Falcons, Alyssa Machado scored nine points for the team lead in set one. Ashley Wysong had a productive first set with six points. In the match Wysong finished with 10 kills, nine digs and three assists.
McClain came back with the second set by a score of 25-22. Jenna Perie scored seven points for the Lady Tigers. Delph and Davis each had five.
The match got interesting in the third set with 13 ties.
Delph gave MHS an early advantage at 2-1 with point off serves, and junior Kate Hammond tied the game at 3-3, followed with the score being tied at four with a point from Saylor.
Later in the set, Massie’s Kara Crabill tied the set at 9-9, but Davis gave MHS the lead with a tip shot over the net.
Crabill, who ended the match with 18 kills, again tied the set (11-11), but the Lady Tigers regained the advantage with a point by Saylor. After another tie at 12-12, Saylor, again, gave MHS the lead at 13-12.
McClain then built an 18-14 lead via points from Perie, Delph and Hammond.
Trailing 20-16, Massie rallied back with four consecutive points to tie the set at 20-20. A spike by Saylor put MHS ahead at 21-20. Davis followed with an ace, but again C-M tied the set at 22 with a point from Wysong, and took the lead after Hoffer tipped the ball to the McClain side of the court.
Hoffer put the third set to rest with back-to-back spike hits for the win.
The fourth set started off with MHS gaining leads of 4-0, 6-2 and 9-3, but the Lady Falcons swooped in to cut the MHS lead in half at 10-5.
MHS built a 19-14 cushion against the Lady Falcons, but the lead wasn’t safe as Massie came back with spikes and blocks by Hoffer and Machado, eventually bringing the score to 21-21 after an ace by Hoffer.
C-M then scored the next four points to seal the SCOL win.
The victory puts C-M at 13-6 overall, 9-2 in the SCOL. MHS stands at 11-8 overall, 4-7 in the SCOL.
MHS will play again Thursday as they will host London, with JV play starting at 5:30 p.m.
