Indians win SCOL boys golf championship

The Hillsboro Indians won the South Central Ohio League tournament by shooting a team score of 346, and by winning the tournament, Hillsboro also was the SCOL Champion for 2011.
It's the first time Hillsboro has won the SCOL since the 2007 season.
"The boys fought hard all day and hung in there," HHS coach Dan Spidel said. "Even though the scores were higher than expected, I am so proud that the team didn't give up."
Individual scores for Hillsboro included: Levi Fleming and Austin Bagshaw at 85. Blake Brown and Taylor Anderson shot scores of 88, and Alex VanZant came in with a 97. Josh Clark shot a 98.
For MHS, individual scores in the SCOL tournament included: J.T. Bunner 38, Jacob Branham 44, Adam Sharp 40, Ryan Perie 45, Seth Willman 38 and Evan Mustard 46.
"I was real proud of the guys all year. We fought and battled every day for the most part," MHS coach Tim Bolender said.
Fleming and Bagshaw both earned first-team All-SCOL honors, while Anderson racked up enough points to be named second-team All-SCOL.
First team All-SCOL players were: J.T. Bunner of McClain, Austin Bagshaw and Levi Fleming of Hillsboro, Seth Baker and Michael Penwell of Washington, Kyle Clifton of Clinton-Massie and Austin Smith of London.
Team scores for the SCOL tournament were: Hillsboro 346, Miami Trace 347, Washington CH 349, McClain 351, London 353, Clinton-Massie 361 and Madison-Plains 451.
On Sept. 27 in the SE Division II sectional held at Shawnee State Park, Hillsboro qualified as a team to move on to the district tournament by finishing fourth out of 16 teams.
Gallia Academy dominated the field with a team score of 308. Other teams qualifying were: Chesapeake at 351, Jackson 357, Hillsboro 358 and Piketon 380.
For Hillsboro, scores were: Bagshaw 79, Fleming 86, Brown 107, Anderson 93 and VanZant 100.
"It's quite an honor to qualify since we had only two seniors and three freshmen in the lineup," Spidel said. "No Hillsboro team has qualified for the district tournament since 2005. We've had several individuals qualify since then, but it's more fun when the whole team gets to play."
McClain also played in the sectionals with a team score of 349. Individual scores included: J.T. Bunner 75, Jacob Branham 88, Adam Sharp 95, Seth Willman 91 and Ryan Perie 98.
Bunner advanced to the districts as an individual for the Tigers.
"We are excited about advancing to the District Tournament through J.T. as an individual," Bolender said. "He had a strong showing in the Sectional and is capable of the same type of performance in the district tournament."[[In-content Ad]]
