The Washington Blue Lions dominated the South Central Ohio League tri-meet Wednesday evening at Hillsboro High School as they took down the host Indians and McClain Tigers.

The Blue Lions defeated the Tigers 71-6 and the Indians by a score of 54-19. Hillsboro won the final match of the meet by defeating Highland County rival McClain 66-4.

“Washington is a good team,” Hillsboro head coach Nate Horne said. “They have good young kids and have good seniors. They are for real. Our league is tough and we have a league to be proud of in wrestling.”

Against Washington, McClain’s lone win came from Steven Barber as he won with a second period pin fall over Washington’s Heath Klontz in the 145-pound match. McClain’s lone win against rival Hillsboro came when Caleb Cooper defeated Tyler Griego 16-5 in the 215-pound match.

In their first event of the tri-meet, Hillsboro had four wins over the Blue Lions. In the 103-pound class Brandon Carter won via forfeit, followed with three straight wins from his HHS teammates later in the event.

HHS dropped the first six matches against Washington, until the forfeit win by Carter. Following another WSHS win, Andrew Goolsby won by pin fall over Anthony Smith in the 125-pound match. Hillsboro’s Joey Middleton gained another Indian win with a 9-4 decision over Caleb Huffman in the 130-pound match. In Middleton’s match the score was tied 4-4 until Middleton had a two-point takedown in the third period.

The final HHS win against the Blue Lions came when Mason Hunick won by technical fall (21-5) over Jimmy VanDyke in the 135-pound match.

Hillsboro was victorious 12 times against rival McClain in the final event of the tri-meet. Winning via forfeit for HHS were Carter (103), Josh Bice (112), Goolsby (125), Middleton (130), Hunick (135) and Kaleb West (140).

DJ Davis (HHS) won the 119-pound match as he defeated Cody Barnhart by pin fall in the first period.

In the 145-pound match Connor Johnston (HHS) defeated Barber 12-5. The 152-pound match was filled with excitement as Hillsboro’s Thomas Wilkin narrowly defeated Joe Unger 11-10 in three periods.

Eric Short (HHS) won via first period pin fall over Layne Crocratha in the 160-pound match. Michael Short (HHS) followed with a pin fall win in the 171-pound match, defeating Dillon East. In the 189-pound match Allen Strout (HHS) pinned John Caster in the second period.

“Our team wrestled well,” Horne said. “Andrew (Goolsby) is a solid senior for us and Tyler (Griego) had to wrestle both McClain’s and Washington’s best wrestlers. Joey (Middleton) wrestled well against Washington and Mason (Hunick) also did well against Washington.”

The Tigers will wrestle again on Saturday as they travel to take on Vinton County High School at 8 a.m. MHS will also wrestle on Wednesday, Jan. 20 when they travel to face Clinton-Massie in a SCOL showdown.

HHS will take the mat again Wednesday, Jan. 20 as they host Batavia and Roger Bacon at 5 p.m.
