CHILLICOTHE — The Hillsboro Indians opened up the 2010-11 boys basketball season with a tough loss Friday night at Zane Trace High School, falling to the Logan Elm Braves, 67-43 in the Zane Trace Tip-Off Classic.
On Saturday, HHS lost to Western Brown 71-65 at Western Brown High School.
Against the Broncos, the Indians (0-2) trailed 20-10 after the first quarter, but led 38-34 at halftime by outscoring WB 18-14 in the second frame.
In the third quarter the Broncos led 18-16, but HHS had one last rally in them, winning the final quarter 21-19.
On Saturday, HHS was led by Tyrand Cumberland and Eli Hogsett with each player scoring 20 points. Cumberland made two 3-pointers. Chase Gilliland scored eight, followed by Jarrod Hart with five.
Devante Ames had four points, as did Colt Coates.Blake Brown and Caleb Wilson each scored one point.
Against the Braves on Friday (at ZTHS), HHS trailed 16-12 after the first quarter and were outscored 17-9 in the second frame. At the half, HHS trailed 33-21.
The Braves scored 17 in each of the final two quarters, winning the second half 34-22. The Indians scored 12 in the third and 10 in the fourth quarter.
HHS made 15 shots from the floor, including two 3-pointers by Colt Coates and Tyrand Cumberland.
Coates led HHS in scoring with 11 points, followed by Eli Hogsett with eight. Cumberland scored seven and Devante Ames had six.
Blake Brown, Chase Gilliland and Caleb Wilson each scored three points. All three made one free throw. Jarrod Hart had two points.
Thomas and Riffle led LE, with each scoring 13 points. Elswick for LE made three 3-pointers.
For the game, HHS made 11 free throws, with the Braves converting 14.
The Indians stand at 0-2 overall.
HHS will take the court again Tuesday for their first South Central Ohio League game, hosting the Madison-Plains Golden Eagles in their home opener at Hillsboro High School.[[In-content Ad]]
