Hillsboro splits twin bill with Post 23

HILLSBORO — The Hillsboro Post 129 baseball team managed to split a doubleheader Tuesday with Portsmouth Post 23 at Shaffer Park. Hillsboro lost the opening game 7-1, but rallied back with a nightcap win by a score of 7-6.
Post 129 is 11-17 overall and 5-4 in the SCOL. Hillsboro is in the thick of things in the league race. Portsmouth is 8-3 in the league, and both Washington C.H. Post 25 and Circleville Post 134 each have four league losses.
The second game was the winning one for the home team, defeating Portsmouth 7-6, but almost squandering a seven-run lead in the process. Portsmouth scored four runs in the sixth inning, adding two more in the final inning.
The two late innings by Post 23 still weren't enough to overcome the production of Hillsboro in the first five innings.
"We played a good game for the first four innings, but we allowed extra bases, and that hurt us in the second game," Post 129 General Manager Scott Morgan said. "We showed reliance and held on."
Post 129 scored three times in the second inning with Ian Adams, Luke Meyer and Matt Carey.
Meyer started off the inning with a single. Carey followed with a one-out base hit and Ian Adams singled to score Meyer. Down to their last out, Cody Shaver batted in Carey, while Adams scored the third run of the inning.
The final four Post 129 runs came in the fourth with Adams, Corey Walker, Shaver and Brady Camp all crossing home plate.
Adams (2-for-3, one walk, two runs) led off the inning by reaching on an error. Corey Walker took three bases on a triple, allowing Adams to score. Cody Shaver walked. Camp brought both runners home on a three-run home run, giving Post 129 four runs in the inning, along with a seven-run lead.
Camp finished 1-for-2 with two walks and three RBIs. Dustin Taylor was 0-for-2 but took the bases twice, one on a walk and one on a hit-by-pitch.
Meyer finished 2-for-3 with one run.
The win went to Tucker Hughes, and the save was credited to Zach Uhl.
Hughes pitched 5 1-3 innings with seven strikeouts. He gave up five hits and one walk. Hughes surrendered four runs. Uhl gave up two runs, with four strikeouts and four hits.
"Tucker pitched a good game," Morgan said. "They (Post 23) just got to him in the sixth. I also liked our defense, it was solid."
In the first game of the doubleheader, Hillsboro scored their first run in the opening inning with Hughes scoring on a bases-loaded error by the catcher as the throw to first base on a pickoff attempt was errant.
That was all the scoring for Post 129, as they stranded 10 batters for the game.
"We had too many mental errors, which led to runs," Morgan said. "We got on base, but we couldn't get the key hit we needed. Our bats are starting to come around."
Jacob Dillon was charged with the loss on the mound. He struck out five, allowing seven runs (five earned) on 12 hits, three walks and one hit batter.
Portsmouth tied the game in the third, added two more runs to take the lead in the fourth and took control with four runs in the seventh.
