Hillsboro slips against Post 23

HILLSBORO — In the nightcap of the weekend wooden bat games at Shaffer Park, the Hillsboro Post 129 team was unable to put together complete innings from start to finish, dropping a non-league game to Portsmouth Post 23, 7-1 Sunday.
The loss drops Hillsboro to 14-19 overall with a big week of baseball ahead. In league games, Hillsboro is 6-4.
On Tuesday, Post 129 will play the remainder of the Chillicothe Post 757 game which is tied at eight in the eighth inning, starting at 5 p.m. at Mary Lou Patton Park in Chillicothe. Following the completion of the suspended game, Hillsboro will play Post 757 in a scheduled league game. On Wednesday, Hillsboro will host a doubleheader vs. the Chillicothe Capitals, and on Thursday, Post 129 will travel to Washington C.H. to take on the Post 25 Aces.
Hillsboro's lone run against Post 23 came in the fourth inning with Zach Uhl semi-colliding with the Portsmouth catcher at the plate, scoring the run off a sacrifice fly to centerfield by Bryce Bean.
Post 129 did have numerous opportunities to add runs to their side of the scoreboard, loading the bases in the first inning with Ian Adams reaching after being hit by a pitch to start the game, a single by Tucker Hughes and a base hit by Cody Shaver to centerfield. Post 129 had the bases full with just one out, but consecutive strikeouts ended the inning.
Hillsboro had one runner on the bases in each of the next two innings and led off the fourth with back-to-back singles by Uhl and Tyler Campbell. Uhl scored the previously-mentioned lone Hillsboro run in the inning, but a strikeout and pop up to the catcher halted any opportunity for more Post 129 runs in the fourth.
In the fifth Adams led off with a base hit down the third base line, but he was eventually caught stealing at second, and two more outs later on a strikeout and pop up to the short stop, again, ended the inning with a Hillsboro base runner stranded. The runner was Tucker Hughes, who took first on an error.
Post 129 had two runners on bases in the sixth with Campbell forcing a bases-loaded walk, followed by Bean drawing a walk in the next at-bat. Hillsboro did force the full count in the ensuing at-bats, but both ended via strikeout.
Dustin Taylor was charged with the loss for Hillsboro.
Besides the second inning where Post 23 scored six of the their seven runs (12 batters to the plate), Taylor faced just 14 batters from the third inning until the final out. He finished with one strikeout, while allowing five hits and six walks.
"Throw out the second inning and our pitching was excellent," Hillsboro head coach Ritchie Butler said. "We didn't play our best in either nightcap against Portsmouth either day this weekend. We had too many errors and they got the hits; after that, the inning fell apart."
Also in the six-run second inning, Hillsboro committed three fielding errors.
