Football Preview: Bearcats travel to Williamburg for showdown

BAINBRIDGE — The season opener went as planned for the Paint Valley Bearcats with a 39-0 non-league win over the Belpre Golden Eagles. This Friday night, however, even though Williamsburg is 0-1, Week 2 will be a much bigger challenge for the Bearcats.
Williamsburg, of the Southern Buckeye Conference, is coming off a 28-14 loss to Summit Country Day, but this game presents more of an obstacle for the Bearcats because Williamsburg not only runs the Pistol offense, but they have solid skill players to back up their style.
In last week's game for the Bearcats (1-0), they were led by senior quarterback Eli Barker with 168 rushing yards (two rushing touchdowns) and 65 passing yards.
Last season, Williamsburg defeated the Bearcats 31-14.
"Williamsburg is one of the better teams we'll see on our schedule all season," Paint Valley head coach Pete Hollon said. "They are big, strong and athletic."
Williamsburg had first-and-goal three times last week, but not scoring any touchdowns in those situations led to their loss, along with their offense giving up some points.
Coach Hollon said everything for the Williamsburg offense goes through senior quarterback Jacob Edmisten (6-1, 180).
"He runs the option as well as anyone," Hollon said. "He likes to keep the ball, but if he does pitch it, it will be to the tailback."
The tailback for the Wildcats is senior Joey Clowerey (5-8, 190). When they pass the ball, look towards senior tight end Anthony Young (6-1, 235).
"Williamsburg is just really athletic, and their quarterback was a wide receiver last year," Hollon said. "The quarterback is good, and they just have good skill players."
The offensive line of Williamsburg is large with no player under 220 pounds, and anchoring them is junior center Michael Posey (6-2, 225). Another lineman to watch is junior Andrew Dean (6-1, 315).
Defensively, Williamsburg runs a 4-4 defense.
"They have no gap control, they just want to get up field," Hollon said. "Posey is also their linebacker, and their defense is built around him."
The question is, What do the Bearcats have to do to offset the size and strength of Williamsburg?
"We got to play solid ball control offense," Hollon said. "We have to keep their offense off the field. We need 12-14 play drives, which will be the biggest key of the game."
Last week, PV had scoring drives of 12, 9, 16 and 11 plays.
What about defense?
"They are deceptive (on offense)… we have to know our assignments and rely on our teammates," he said. "We have to tackle well, especially out in space.
"I don't know exactly where we are as a team, but we will know after Friday night."
